Drys carry election in Jamestown today, 277-252

Wet faction now turns to petition for county wide legalization in Russell County

By Larry Smith, 92.7 The WAVE

It was a narrow defeat. The margin was only 25 votes, but the drys won the special election today, Tuesday, July 23, 2013 to allow alcoholic beverages with meals in Jamestown by a vote of 277-252.
YES - 252 Votes: Lake Precinct - 102; Jamestown City Precinct - 131; and Absentee -19
NO - 277 Votes: Lake Precinct 120; Jamestown City Precinct, 140; Absentee, 17
The Yes effort carried only the absentee, and the measure failed. However, a petition is now being circulated to make the entire county wet. The WAVE is following that story closely. - LARRY SMITH, 92.7 FM the WAVE radio.

Wet, dry, moist, and the proposed fate of the dram drinkers

By JIM

"Commence, Lord, to pour out Thy blessings to Jamestown, for Lord, Thou knowest that they are sadly in need of it there..." (from a mighty prayer heavenward sent by Adair Countian Clayton Miller from the Old Zion Baptist Church, c. 1847. See Cyrus sends notes on Clayton Miller Prays a Mighty Prayer

Today's moist/dry election in Jamestown, in which Demon Rum has the chance to (legally) rear its head in Russell County for the first time since shortly after the repeal of the Volstead Act, has not unexpectedly brought to the front the model known as "Baptists and Bootleggers." (Think I'm making that up? Google it.)

She's faced cancer 5 times. But what she fears most? Speeders

And now, "improvements" by the State Highway Department only make it easier to speed. All that was needed was a stoplight at Green Hills Road. She wants to know who can explain this waste of money for a project which wasn't needed in the first place, and actually makes a bad problem worse

By Mitzi Bault
Personal commentary

I have been told that I have cancer 5 times.

I have been taking chemo this time for over a year. Chemo I can only let God and my doctors call the shots and it is in their hands.

But what I am most afraid of is going to get my mail, turning in my drive or pulling out of my driveway.

A brief history of the Jeffries Building 1902-1923

Take plenty of time to read this one. Jim seems to produce his magnum opus with each new treatise. This article, with the history of one of Columbia's most significant landmarks, is one of those.
