How does Maury Lewis get the snake out of her tree?

Can anybody out there help? It's a good sized snake and it has been holed up in the tree for four days now.

Maury Lewis writes:

I have a snake inside of a tree on my property. There was a bird nest there and when the snake went into the tree a good size baby Starling came out. It was too small to fly and it hopped over into some grass with mom and dad flying over head.

I don't know if the snake ate a bird in the nest and is too big to get out or if it just likes that tree. The snake has been in the tree for four days and all I see now and not very often is his black head with a white throat. It is a pretty good size snake. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get it out? - Maury Lewis

Rainbow in The Holler would make a calendar picture

George Rice writes:
Loved the rainbow picture, well framed with the road. Would have made a calendar picture. Another proof that there should always be a camera within arms reach because the rainbow would not wait to find a camera. I also enjoyed the rose picture by Linda in the rose garden.

Community support, generosity for schools is proven now

Two short, highly successful Donors Choose.org drives are measure of proof

Patty Jones writes:
I concur with Denise in her comments about the generosity of this community and the support of the school system and media. I am also thankful for organizations like donorschoose.org that help us make these things possible. I have been in contact with them regarding the Chromebook drive we had earlier this spring. The 30 Chromebooks will arrive this fall at Adair County Primary Center. Like Denise, I can't wait to share pictures of them in the hands of our students. Thanks to all of you who support those who support our students! --Patty Jones

Billy Joe Fudge: Nomination for Most Artistic Photo, Ever, on CM

Comments re photo 49797 Julia Miller Horton Rose Garden at Trabue House in Columbia

By Billy Joe Fudge

I would like to nominate this photo for Columbia Magazine's Most Artistic Photos of 2013 If Not Ever, Gallery.

If you don't have a Gallery of nominations then this will be a photo with which to start.
- Ground rule 1. - No winners.
- Ground rule 2. - Just being nominated and having that nomination accepted by the Most Artistic Photo Committee will garner accolades enough for those blessed enough to have photos accepted to the Gallery.
- Ground rule 3. The Gallery should be accessible from the front page of Columbia Magazine.
- Ground rule 4. - There are no more ground rules.
Thanks, BJF - I'm sure the photographer, Linda Waggener, will appreciate the compliment. Quite an accolade, since we're some 200-300 photos away from the 30,000 one in the CM Photo Archives where one could peruse photos, five at a time, and maybe spend 7,500 minutes, at 15 seconds per picture (or approximately 45 eight-hour days) evaluating all of them. A reader will find, we're sure, many BJF photos worthy of a nomination. Maybe some critical viewer will do a careful search and give other nominations. Thanks again for the suggestion. - EW

Happy Tails: Planting a garden

Peg Schaeffer is a successful gardener. Successful not so much in the she produces - she says half the flowers make it and somehow most of the vegetables make it through. But superbly successful in what the garden means to her. It helps her accomplish what life's about. Click on headline for story with photo(s) and the ending - a good life lesson quote for the day.

President and Founder, Sugarfoot Farms Rescue

When I moved onto the farm the former owner, Jim Burns, had a garden. It was fenced in with three raised beds with four sections each. One of the sections already had lettuce growing. So I continued the garden tradition Jim had started. I usually plant vegetables in some of the beds and flowers in others. Over the years I have planted a lilac bush, forsythia, and a dwarf peach tree my son sent me one year for Mother's Day.

Carol Perkins: An after the fact commentary on Memorial day

As long as I can remember, I have stomped the hallowed grounds of cemeteries in Adair, Cumberland, and Metcalfe Counties, placing flowers, Carol Perkins says. It's a custom she has practiced with great diligence, making sure that not only her relatives gravesites, but a few strangers as well, are remembered.

I know this subject is after the fact, but I didn't think of it in time. I always think of things after the occasion, but I am writing about this nonetheless. Today, I am focusing on what I call cemetery flowers. I can't get the dreadful smell out of my nose or out of my car since my trek Memorial weekend to place them on the graves of my relatives.

The Wild Strawberry Patch (Among My Souvenirs)

The human mind is an awesome thing, not appreciated as it should be until something happens to it. I am keenly aware how precious it is because I witnessed first hand my dear wife Connie lose her mind totally over a 15-year time span. It was diagnosed as Alzheimer's Disease, a cruel destroyer of memories each one carefully packed as a precious jewel in one's personal treasure chest, the mind, for enjoyment just on a whim. Connie was denied what so many of us take for granted -- our precious memories.

Bank Robbery in Hart County

This week I wish to talk about a book that cannot any longer be read. So far as I know there was only one copy - destroyed in a 1977 fire. The story was brought to mind by last week's account in the News-Herald of the history of the Canmer/Pioneer/Central Kentucky bank.

The book was a 250-page transcript of a 1924 trial in Hart Circuit Court of W. V. Bell, president of the First National Bank in Horse Cave, for conspiracy to rob the Canmer Deposit Bank in Canmer. The jury found him not guilty.

Denise Pyles Grant: iPad funding is a dream become reality

It took just three days for the Adair County community, both near and far, with the help of 15 donors and a generous matching funds from DonorsChoose.org, to fully fund innovative teacher's request for funding for two iPads for her Science Classes.
A simple thank you just doesn't suffice. All I know to say is "my cup runneth over" and my gratitude is heartfelt. I can't wait to share pictures of my students using their iPads!! - DENISE PYLES GRANT

Freightliner-Kenworth collision on I-65 results in death of driver

Second driver treated and released at Hardin Memorial Hospital. Crash shuts down northbound lanes for several hours. Post 4 Troopers, Hardin Co. EMS, Elizabethtown Fire and Rescue, the State Highway Department, and the Hardin County Coroner's Office assist at the scene

By MTPR Norman Chaffins, Public Affairs Officer
Kentucky State Police Post 4, Elizabethtown, KY

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY - On Saturday, June 1, 2013 at approximately 4:42pmET, Post 4 received a call from motorists stating that there had been an injury crash around the 101 mile marker on Interstate 65 in Hardin County.

I arrived at 4:45pmET and citizens were administering CPR to a victim on the northbound side. My investigation revealed that a 2007 Kenworth being operated by a 56-year-old man from Kenova Wayne, West Virginia was northbound on I-65 and was traveling behind a 2000 Freightliner operated by 38-year-old Avdija Huskic of St. Louis, Missouri.
