The Derby and Horse racing are happy times, but it is a major concern to horse lovers everywhere and the sad thing is that it happens to all athletes - two and four legged. Peg Schaeffer comments on this problem and another: Breaking pets hearts because unknowning pet seekers don't do minimal research to know what kind of animal will be the new member of the family - with some tips on which dog might be right for you. Click on headline for complete story with photo(s) of some of the breeds mentioned which are adoptable now at Sugarfoot Rescue.

By Peg Schaeffer

Saturday was Derby Day. The Kentucky Derby is one of my favorite holidays. I'm a big fan of the Derby and the Triple Crown. I have a niece who refuses to watch horse racing. She is opposed to the treatment of the race horses. They are started at a very young age before their bone development is complete and if a horse becomes lame or breaks down they are usually sent to slaughterhouses. This is because of the greed of the owners whose first interest is the profit.

Carol Perkins: Prom. I feel it in the air

Junior Proms can be extreme affairs. They bring out the best in students (usually). As a sponsor for one class, the writer remembers the most elaborate was one with an Egyptian theme, with a gigantic King Tut, that Metcalfe County High School held at the Cave City Convention Center. She's foggy on the year, but remembers every detail including the show stopping Chippendalesque "Eye of the Tiger" skit mishap. Thing was, it wasn't an accident. Next earlier: Carol Perkins: The Library
The writer, Carol Perkins, and co-host Susan Shirley have a new radio show: Carol and Susan-Unscripted on 99.1 FM the Hoss every Wednesday night form 5pm-7pmCT and again on Sunday from 4pm-6pmCT) No promise they will reveal the names of the Cave City prom perps - then, though every reader of the story will be left wondering who they are, and have a right to know, now that the statute of limitations is past. Readers will just have to listen in. - CM

By Carol Perkins

Prom. I feel it in the air. Formals hang on hooks behind their closet doors on hooks because they are too long for the closet, and tuxedos are somewhere waiting for pickup. Hopefully, the pants won't be too long or the shoes too large. The details are important.

Happy to learn name of Paulownia tree

Blushful Moon writes:
Thank You!!!

I have been wanting to know for the past few years what this tree was doing growing up within a tree and such a pretty purple looking tree it reminded me of wisteria at first; then a lilac; and now I know; I am just wondering how it gets that high and stays so pretty with no pruning or anything; and you always will find them in country; hardly any in town.

But at least I have my answer to the name of the tree and I thank you for that.

Blessings, Blushful Moon~

From Sycamore Springs: Star of Bethlehem is vexatious weed

She's settled on concoction of Boiling Water and White Vinegar in fight to reclaim pasture ground from invading Star of Bethlehem

By Cynthia A Meyer
The flower in question is Star of Bethelem. Even as pretty as the tiny flower seems to be. It is difficult to get rid of once it takes root in pasture areas. I have been battling the noxious little weed for years.

Trying all the DIY recipes to eradicate from the premises. So far I am only slowing it down at best, but a mixture of boiling water and white vinegar seem to gain me a bit of ground against the weed. - Cynthia A Meyer

Funniest Weddings

Television offerings are replete with shows whose themes are the "funniest this or that." Some day it will be discovered that weddings are a field ripe for harvest in the "funniest" category, something I have been involved in as a church pianist-organist for over 60 years. Here are two of my entries.
