Guest editorial from Doug McCammish: Can Do Spirit Recent ACHS A-Team success leads to editorial with praise all around: Adair County road crew, the team which put together the successful application for Adair County's Work Ready Community in Progress led by Terry Partin and Darrell Overstreet, Connor's Warriors, Mary's House, and the very special, ongoing leadership of Ron Heath Chairman, Columbia-Adair County Economic Development Authority The recent outstanding and continuing success of the Adair County Academic Team leads me to say something that has been on my mind for a long time. We so much admire those who have the "can do" attitude that has made this nation great and there have been so many examples of this attitude in Adair County over the past year or so that make us proud. For instance, the Adair County road crew building bridges, the team that put together the successful application for Adair County's Work Ready Community In Progress, and the group led by Terry Partin and Darrell Overstreet who found a way to make one new school building do the work of two are all examples of a "can do" spirit - and there are more. Along with the academic team and the golf team and the groups raising money for Connor and Mary's House and others, they create a tradition and example of excellence. People in this community can get it done. We don't need to wait for someone else to do it. By the way, do you know that the Work Ready team is one of very few (maybe the only one in the state) that is continuing to work to make sure that Adair County kids are ready for work? Ron Heath is leading this effort joined by ACHS and Lindsey and the adult education folks. You will see results at ACHS graduation and local businesses and industry will be the beneficiaries. - Doug McCammish 2013-02-25 04:56:00 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Commentary
Carol Perkins: I'd like to wring her neck! An off-hand expression brings to mind its origin, and not altogether pleasant one, author remembers. She now chooses to purchase a chicken with whom she's never had a connection and whose neck she shall not have to wring. The next earlier Carol Perkins article: Carol Perkins: Designers don't understand ample women By Carol Perkins "I'd like to wring her neck!" Perhaps you've never said that about a co-worker or your child or even your sister or someone who annoys you, but I sure have. Wringing someone's neck is an off-hand way of saying, "I've had IT with her (or him)." Although not sure of this, I came to the conclusion while thinking about this article that the expression must have come from the days of killing chickens.
