Besse Jean Luttrell Vanover, Casey Co., KY (1958-2013)

She was a native of Russell County, KY and the matriarch of a large, respected Casey County, KY, family. She leaves nine direct living descendants. She was a member of the Mt. Calvary Community Church and the widow of Kirmon Michael Vanover.

Besse Jean Luttrell Vanover, age 54, of Liberty, KY, passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at her residence.

Cremation rites have been honored by McKinney-Brown Funeral Home. There will be a memorial service at 12pm noon CT/1pmET, on Friday, February 1, 2013, at 2075 Poplar Springs Road, Liberty, KY.

State reports scattered damage after overnight storms

This state report lists unconfirmed reports of roofs in roadways Barren County, as well as power lines and poles down in Cave City, Barren County; Metcalfe County had several trees down and roads blocked and 500 to 1,000 were out of power. Also nearby, a mobile home was overturned in Marion County. Damage also reported in Calloway, McCracken, Muhlenberg County, and McQueary County

FRANKFORT, KY. (January 30, 2013) - No confirmed tornadoes or widespread damage has been reported to Kentucky Emergency Management (KYEM) after last night's storms moved through the Commonwealth. Local officials have submitted reports of scattered damages, mostly due to high winds. Most reports are in western Kentucky.

Funeral services will be Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 2pmCT, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, with Bro. Bobby Withers officiating. Burial in Jones Chapel Cemetery, 2700 Jones Chapel Road, Columbia, KY. Visitation will be after 4pmCT, Friday, February 1, 2013.

Mary Lou Ross Thomas, Casey Co., KY (1935-2013)

Mrs. Thomas was a loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother. Her family was her life's work. She was a talented artist, with an exceptional eye for beauty and art. She was a voracious reader who loved history, nature and travel, leading her family on many happy trips around the country. Her depth of knowledge of American history ranged from colonial America, World War II and the Kennedy presidency, with a special affinity for the works of Thomas Jefferson and his home, Monticello. She was a Christian whose kindness, thoughtfulness, gentle nature, encouraging spirit, love and devotion to family will be deeply missed but always cherished. She was a member of the Scott County Church of Christ.

Mary Lou Ross Thomas, age 77, of Cynthiana, KY passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 1pmCT/2pmET, Saturday, February 2, 2013, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home, 752 Campbellsville Street, Liberty, KY, with Bro. J.D. McDonald officiating. Burial will follow in South Fork Cemetery. Visitation will be after 12pm noon CT/1pmET, Saturday, until time of services.

Hiseville gets funding for new volunteer fire department

Lt. Gov. Abramson at Barren County Community to present check to Barren County Fiscal Court. New Fire Department will serve 1,500 households in northwestern Metcalfe County and northeastern Barren County

HISEVILLE, KY - Lieutenant Governor Jerry Abramson today joined local officials to announce funding for a new volunteer fire department in the Hiseville community in Barren County.

The $500,000 Community Development Block Grant awarded to the Barren County Fiscal Court will help construct a new 5,100-square-foot fire station in Hiseville. The fire department is also contributing an additional $82,000 toward the project.

(The July 1st enlistment date and July 22nd induction date are correct. Beginning fairly early in World War II, enlistees were given three weeks from the enlistment date to get their affairs in order and to say their goodbyes prior to formal induction into military service.)

COLUMBIA, KY - Adair County's Trey Garmon signed an NAIA scholarship to join the Lindsey Wilson College men's golf team for the 2013-14 season, Blue Raider head coach Shaun Cozart announced on Tuesday, January 29, 2013.

Garmon made his decision official with a signing ceremony at the Adair County High School library Tuesday morning.

Joining Trey at the event were his parents Missy and Shane Garmon, as well as his brother Tanner and high-school coach Steve Burton.

Garmon joins his Adair County teammate Alex Durham as local members of the Blue Raiders' 2013 recruiting class. - Dan White

Indians Fall to North Hardin, 67-26 at Radcliff, KY

Long time fifth region power North Hardin handed the Adair County Indiand their worse defeat of the season 67-26 Tuesday night in Radcliffe, KY. The Trojans improved to 17-7 while the Indians fell to 15-8.

North led 22-10, 43-16, 60-18, and finally 67-26 at end of each period. Scoring for the Indians was as follows Jayden Willis 5, Chance Melton 4, Kel Stotts 4, Ty Bennett 3, Jacob Pooler 2, Tanner Pooler 2, Jake Hixson 2, Marshall Shelley 2, and Matt Fudge 2. Melton led the Indians with five rebounds.

Recognition of the members of the women's soccer team will precede the unveiling of the 2012 national championship banner during halftime of the men's basketball game.

5:30amCT Jobe Darnell, Adair County Roads Supervisor, is on Bliss Road in Magistrate Perry Reeder's District 4 District with the crew working to remove a downed tree blocking the road. After that, the crew will go to Meyer Road off Cedar Grove Road near Clay Ridge in Magistrate Billy Dean Coffey's District 5.

5:23amCT Ladies and gentlemen, Larry Smith, is now entering the studio of the WAVE FM 92.7. He reports that he encountered heavy debris on Russell Springs Road/KY 80, between Sano Road and the radio station. "Motorists need to be on the lookout. Some of the limbs could cause a wreck," he said.

Adair School District on a 2 hour delay schedule

(4:23amCT, Wednesday, January 30, 2013) - Adair County School Superintendent Alan Reed has announced a two hour delay for school today, based on the potential for downed trees and power lines the storm has produced as it went through Warren County in its eastward movement. The storm is passing through Metcalfe County and is expected to move into Adair County in minutes, he said. He asked everyone to be alert for any changes which may be needed.

KHS to Dedicate Historical Marker at Constitution Square

Marker commemorates African-American soldiers in Civil War. If you go, Constitution Square, 134 S 2nd Street, (Google Map), Danville, KY is 61.7 miles, 1 hour 13 minutes from Downtown Columbia, KY.

FRANKFORT, KY (January 29, 2013) - The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) will dedicate a historical marker to the first U.S. Colored Troops at Camp Nelson at noon Monday, February 4, at Constitution Square, Danville, KY.

In May 1864, nearly 250 black men, most of them slaves, marched from Boyle County to Camp Nelson in Jessamine County to enlist in the Union army. On the way, some Danville citizens threw stones and shot pistols at the recruits.
