The Legend Grows: Rodney L. Thompson - The rest of the story

In this revelation: His great pride in good kinfolk Blackie Nixon. Red, too. His gratitude to Patricia Sexton (Goodwin). His generosity with Rialto's popcorn. His pride in the black 1958 Ford with the white top. How Officer Lonnie interpreted his exit from the gravel driveway at Adair County High School, sideways, and stopped him and cited him for something about his driving. How Cotton Durham and Judge Bruce Montgomery delivered swift, stern justice. The depression of having to park his car and catch the school bus for a month. And more . . .
Ronnie Thompson's response to Dr. Roger Smith's Rodney Thompson, Sr., was the Hero of the Family which was a response to Henry Hunter Durham's letter, H. Hunter Durham comments on Rodney Thompson, his car, about Rodney Thompson, Sr's epic story: Winning the new car at the 1958 Adair County Fair

By Rodney L Thompson Sr

First, before the story, let me thank Dr. Smith for his kind words about me and my parents, he too had parents of the highest quality. Yes Dr. Smith, we have to claim "kin" to Blackie and "Red" Nixion. We had numerous good times together At Adair County High and they too are good "kinfolks."

Rodney Thompson, Sr., was the Hero of the Family

Comments re article 52942 H Hunter Durham comments on Rodney Thompson his car

Roger D. Smith DMD writes:
Ed; Rodney was always one of my "Special Cousins." He was older and was a good example and I really enjoyed being around his Mom and Dad when I was growing up. I remember when he won the car, and later, as a youngster, being allowed to sit in the driver's seat was really cool. He was the Hero of the Family.

I think this win made a change in his life, because later he moved and became "Big City" and a Ford Motor Co. higher up. You can understand my admiration for him when you consider that "Red" and "Blackie" Nixon were also cousins. - Roger D Smith DMD
Dr. Smith: While I agree with most of what you say, and I am a great admirer of the Hero of Your Family, I'd never thought anyone could be prouder than to call Red and Blackie Nixon kinfolks! I haven't been able to find my tie to them, yet, but I'm looking, and K. Scott, Mayor of Bliss, told me he'd heard on the television set that everybody on earth are cousins. At least you have papers showing you can claim kin. You are indeed fortunate. -EW

Poet gives background for highly praised Haiku, July 4, 2012

A number of readers noted the wisdom packed into one 3-line Haiku by Robert Stone on July 4, 2012 - most notably Billy Joe Fudge, who asked for the inspiration for the verse, which Mr. Stone has explained, below:

Dear Readers,

Yes, when I was writing the haiku in July 4 Today with CM, it felt different. I can't take much credit for all the wisdom. This is number 295 in a project to write a haiku every day for a thousand days and sometimes it's hard to come up with the next idea. So from time to time I do a series of reflections on quotations or sections of books. This is the tenth haiku reflecting on The Tao Te Ching, by Lao-tzu, J. Legge, Translator (Sacred Books of the East, Volume 39) [1891] with about seventy more to go. The oldest manuscripts go back almost two thousand years. You can read this at Sacred-texts.com/tao/taote.htm

The haiku for July 4 is based upon section 10.

- Robert Stone
