Birds of Kentucky: Hummers are back on Pigtail Ridge

Pattie McClister writes:
The hummers are back on Pig Tail Ridge (Pelham Branch). When my grands come Ill have them help me send pics. They are really colorful this year. Keep up the great job. Thanks for all you do for Columbia. - Pattie McClister
Thanks, Pattie McClister. We anxiously await the photos. And to the great poets and lyricists out there, if there is not a limerick or great country music song or signature anthem or marching band program in "The Hummers are Back on Pig Tail Ridge," I can't think what it would take. - Ed Waggener

Billy Joe Fudge: 7 tips to safely live around poisonous snakes

Comments re photo 45394 Copperhead snake killed on Rice Addition patio

By Billy Joe Fudge
Retired State Forester, Kentucky Division of Forestry

Definitely a Rat snake, as many have commented already.

I've never been "scared" of snakes even the poisonous types; however, whenever I am in known poison snake territory I find myself on high alert when in tall grass or such that impedes my view.

When good snakes die

Heather Evans writes:
I just wanted to say that I'm disappointed that because of lack of knowledge and understanding, good snakes die. Why can't we just wait until they move on, or try to move them along? They eat mice, which I know many people are not fond of, and mice are harder to kill because they can hide in small places. - Heather Evans

IF SENT IN ALL CAPS, posting is delayed

If you've sent an item and are waiting for it to be posted, one thing which may have happened is that it was sent in ALL CAPS. Because of the multiplied effort it takes to post - we aren't being mean, just practical - items sent in ALL caps go to the bottom of the queue. We always try to catch up and rework the submission when time is available, but rarely do.

For quicker post, to get items online more quickly: please submit all items in caps and lower case, in paragraph form, in sentences with standard punctuation, with only one exclamation point per article (and not that unless one's mania compels it). And, unless you are drunk or William Faulkner, please, no ellipses. - Ed Waggener 270-250-2730

Letter: Memorial Day is for Veterans who lost their lives

By Gene Jessee

I don't know if I am the only person who thinks like this or not. But it seems like to me that we are getting our holidays mixed up. Memorial Day is a holiday for remembering our Vets who gave their lives in service to our country and Veterans Day is for honoring our living veterans.

I have great respect for both but I think we should remember the dead only on Memorial Day and our Veterans on November 11 and should keep those men and women who are now serving in our thoughts and prayers daily. Respectfully -Gene Jessee

Thanks, Gene Jessee for making this point. You're actually the second person to send a note to this effect. Another writer commented that Rep. Ed's Memorial Day comments would lead one to think he didn't understand the purpose of Memorial Day. A good point, though in this case the Congressman's heart was in the right place, and I felt that to be most important. It would be good to hear other courteous and respectful comments on the subject. Holidays do seem to evolve and devolve. - Ed Waggener

Never saw copperheads around lake; but has in town

Click on headline for item with photograph entered in evidence

Sheila Wood writes,
I am sending this message to make my new neighbors aware of the very large copperhead snake I found on my patio today (May 28, 2012). I am new to Rice Drive. This snake is every bit of 3 foot long. This concerns me since my whole patio is concrete, and we have a clean yard and so do my neighbors. I am concerned for children and any of my neighbors. We just moved from the lake area never saw a snake there. And now: move to town, and surprise!- Sheila Wood
Thanks, Sheila Wood, for the information. Wonder if anyone else has pictures or information about copperheads or rattlers, the two common poisonous snakes in this area. One rarely hears of a bite here, but residents do need to know about the habits and habitats of the creatures, and to give them ground. They do control rodents, and that, in turn, controls deer ticks, and that in turn keeps down Lyme disease, so God had probably thought this one through pretty well. Education is the important mesage here, I'd think. - EW
