An Excerpt from: From Hope to Hilltop

A memory: For Founder's Day, April 26, 2012

Submitted by JIM

[A]fter a brief sojourn to the Lindsey Wilson campus in June, 2009, my first real visit there in nearly twoscore years, a question kept niggling at the back of my mind: What would the early habitues of "the Lindsay-Wilson" think were they to view and roam the hilltop jewel of Columbia a century later? No one answer emerges, but the phrase "awed wonderment" comes to mind.

In the early winter of 1902, shortly after Columbia was selected as the site of the Training School, Rev. Gross Alexander wrote, "Oh, it is a great, grand opportunity for us, for the people of the Columbia District, and above all for Columbia itself. Let's make much of it." Not quite six years later, in June, 1908, Rev. W.F. Lloyd wrote, "It is really marvelous what a transformation has been wrought in the five years since we began to build on that hill."

Without a doubt, Rev. Alexander would proudly beam at how much has been - and is being - made of the great, grand opportunity that is Lindsey Wilson; Rev. Lloyd would enthusiastically embrace the academic and physical "transformations" of recent years; and all the early backers and believers would rejoice to read in the 2008 Lindsey Wilson College Institutional Factbook: "Anchored firmly in its historical commitment to 'education as transformation,' Lindsey Wilson College is now regarded as Methodism's flagship institution of higher education in Kentucky."

It seems only fitting to close with quote from the bully pulpit of the News (October 8, 1902): "Columbia has enthusiastically embraced the greatest opportunity that has ever been presented her. We have been intensely interested and are now supremely happy."

Fiscal Court votes unanimously to hire outside attorney in hospital sale

  • Update 10:53amCT: Magistrate Billy Rowe calls for public meeting for details of proposed sale to be aired. Judge Melton makes it clear that such a meeting would be Hospital Board's responsibility, not Fiscal Court's
  • Update at 11:12amCT: Bank representatives strongly urging sale, if - technically - not telling Board outright to do so.
  • Update at 11:08amCT: For first time, name of a likely buyer, major for-profit headquartered in Brentwood, TN, comes out in open meeting
  • Update at 3:11pmCT: Judge Melton says court will only be making sure any sale will cover all debts, and that the sale procedures are conducted in accordance with Kentucky statutes; she says decision on whether to sell or not is Board of Trustees prerogative. She asked that the public be aware of possible imposition of taxing district tax even after hospital might be sold, and to know that the sale can also result in property taxes being paid by the new owners if the new owners for-profit.

By Ed Waggener

In a brief meeting, 8am-8:25amCT, this morning, Thursday, April 26, 2012, the Adair County Fiscal Court, acting on the advice of KACO and County Judge Executive Ann Melton, with all magistrates present voted unanimously to hire an outside attorney to represent the county's interest in any sale of the Westlake Regional Hospital. The action came on a motion by Joe Rogers (6), with a second by Sammy Baker (3), with affirming concurrence from the other magistrates present, Harold Burton (1), Billy Dean Coffey (5), and Billy Rowe (7), for a 5-0 vote.

Dr. Ratliff discovers discovery of World Famed Adair Co. Picker

Eddie Kessler of Columbia, KY, has poster from the Adair County Drive-in for Beatles' Movie

The world-famous Adair County Picker, Eddie Kessler, purchased the piece at an auction. He had it for sale on eBay when I saw it. Eddie was kind (thanks Eddie) and let me scan the item for use as a desktop picture on my office computer. I'm a huge Beatles fan, but much more interested in the music than memorabilia.

Given many readers may remember the advertised event, I thought I'd share my scan. I've also included a youtube link to the actual movie short being advertised. - Mike Ratliff, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Mathematics, Lindsey Wilson College
