With his help we did recover her remains this morning. She apparently had fallen off the bluff in front of our house. I want to thank Robbie and Columbia magazine for their help. JIM Gem: Priceless provenance - CR menu hung at Ol' Joe's BBQ

Menu is In the Beginning, right after the late Ruel and Runa Wooten, created the Circle R; prices match those in full-page ad in the Adair County News on Independence Day, 1956. This Jim GEM includes the fascinating tidbit that the Kingburger name being "incorporated."

By JIM

The menu appears to be a very early one, based on the note at the bottom ("The Circle R Drive-In Restaurant is a new organization...") and the fact that the prices match those in the full-page ad which ran in the Wednesday, July 4th, 1956 edition of the News. This was the first newspaper advertisement for the Circle R, which had opened eight days earlier on Tuesday, June 26th.

In early 1957, the owner, Mr. W.R. Wooten, "incorporated" the Kingburger name; the paperwork thereof may viewed in Adair County Miscellaneous Record Book 3.

The original employees:
Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Rowe, managers;
Mrs. John Pendleton, dietitian;
Joyce Lee and Diana Thompson, car hops; and
Betty Hoover and Faye Pelston, inside waitresses. --jim

Poetry by Robert Stone: The Needed Touch, a sonnet

The needed touch
- a sonnet reflecting on Carousel, the musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein
With skills too few to know the needed touch
when heart responds without a spelling force,
the carny barker wordlost strikes too much
but lover hurt admits no spirit coarse.

With innocence too great to hope ignore
when simple circumstance delivers fear,
the starry eyed transforms the daily bore
but claimed still only claims the fleeting cheer.

With insight bright too sudden to digest
when life announces life anew begun,
the unemployed becomes by ploys obsessed
but plotter loses spoils before deed done.

Redemption is a possibility
if you can others show what you now see.

- Robert Stone, 22 April 2012

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester

Wild Strawberries can be seen everywhere this time of year, if you're paying attention.

The ripe, red fruit is fragrant when crushed and, guess what, smells like a strawberry.

JIM: Col. Wolford's busy day

By JIM

The following artickle first appeared in the Columbia Spectator a few months after Col. Wolford began his first term in the US House of Representatives. The article was republished in the October 9, 1883 Interior Journal (Stanford, Ky.)
Lightning Work

By our own Col. Frank Wolford, member of Congress from this (the 11th) district, the following was related one day last week:"When I was first married, I asked my wife to be my mate early in the morning, got married before breakfast, after breakfast bought me a farm and started to pick out a location for a house.

"I met the overseer of the county road, who was that day going to work the road and had almost two hundred hands. I told him I had bought the farm and was on my way to select a spot for my house. He remarked to me if I would furnish him three gallons of whisky he would take his hands and build my house that day.

"I told him I would see him in his grave before I would give him or his hands one drop of whisky. Then he asked me for $5. I gave this to him, and he called up his force and built the house that day, and it was the best house I ever saw--12 feet square. I moved into the house before sundown."

The next earlier Carol Perkins Column: Carol Perkins; Thinking of life as pieces of pie. Part I of 2

By Carol Perkins

Continuing with my story about life and pie, I was at the end of the butterscotch days of high school where life was sweet, most of the time and ended too soon. At least, that was my perception.

It's Earth Day: April 22, 2012

Today, Sunday, April 22, 2012 is EARTH DAY

Many Events have already been held in public schools, local colleges and universities, and many churches will be having Earth Day events today. We encourage submissions, including photos and stories of events which have happened, and announcements of programs and events to come.

For more on Earth Day, there's a good entry in Wikipedia at EARTH DAY.

There's also an interesting story about an Earth Day promotion, a very low energy light bulb, and LED one, which lasts for 20 years - and costs $60. Here's a link to the story at the BBC online: US introduces $60 LED light bulb. All the stories say that the costs of the bulbs will be coming down, and in fact Amazon has LED bulbs for as little as $10. (Shop for LED Light Bulbs at Amazon).

We'd like reader comments on the subject. - CM

Tom Chaney. R759 review: Earth Day column redux

Of Writers and Their Books No. R759 : First appeared Earth Day 22 April 2007 in the Hart County Herald five years ago. Appropriately this column ending with "Requiem" first appeared on Earth Day in 2007 and is appearing on Earth Day again in 2012. The featured author, Kurt Vonnegut, died April 11, 2007 as a result of a fall. So it goes. - Robert Stone
The next earlier Tom Chaney column : R758A review: The Legend of Pope Joan

By Tom Chaney

And so it goes

Kurt Vonnegut, whose dark comedy and compelling moral vision informed a generation disaffected with Vietnam, the destruction of the environment, and the depersonalization of a consumer society, died last week at 84.

While he wrote plays, short fiction, and essays, his novels spoke most forcefully to a countercultural generation. Here in the Bookstore his works are among the most requested titles. Not one of them ever gathers dust.

Chan Bush: Chat Room Friend

In the days after Connie went to live at Geriatrics nursing home never to return home, I had some real difficulties adjusting to our new life.

I had heard that there were caregiver chat rooms on the Internet but I hadn't a clue how to get started. I was apprehensive because I was aware that you could find weirdos who would talk on any subject.
