Big Al: New Orleans on Tv; Chicago vs Nashville rinkside

A Nashville evening was great if not perfect. The Cats did beat pesky Cards on Tv. But the Blackhawks beat our Predators one lousy goal - breaking a 4-4 tie. But that was made up for when Wichita had his picture taken with Preds backup goalie Anders Lindback and I, Big Al, have a keepsake photo with the legendary Blues Brothers, Elwood and Joliet Jake. Go Cats!!! -BIG AL

Chuck Hinman, IJMA: Kissing in my family

It's Just Me Again by Chuck Hinman : Kissing in our family
The next previous Chuck Hinman column:: Chuck Hinman: IJMA 103 : Honeymoon Memories

By Chuck Hinman

MY FIRST KISS (with a real girl)

Contrary to the impression I may have left with some of my readers, I was not one of the parties involved in the first kiss, it was Adam and Eve.

My first kiss with a real girl friend was in the fall of 1939 at Peru State Teachers College, Peru, Nebraska. I nervously planted one on Elda Wyatt after walking her to her residence hall. I believe we had been studying together (wink) at the Library.

Commends Greg Burton: Cobbs Plantation story

Ken Poole writes:
Nice work up on Cobbs,

I've been over this as well and found Baught's land as well as Abraham Woods property was miles to the west near the great rocks of the Falls of the Appomattox river.

In 1702 or 1704 a John Bolling was granted 400 acs near where said Cobbs is now. This is found in the Lost English Land Grants. It appears to me the said Cobbs location got confused by the Park people.

Can this be correct? I also walked over the area. Thomas Lygon owned property near there. Graves? No wonder they can't find them if they got the wrong property. --Ken Poole

No frigate like a book

I just returned from the Dry Tortugas. It was my second attempt to get there.

For those of you who are as geographically challenged as was I at Christmas 1964, the Dry Tortugas are those low islands which form a constellation in the Gulf of Mexico off Key West, Florida.

Victoria Pike: First report, Democratic conventions

Despite the biggest day in Kentucky Crescent City history since Kentuckians carried Andrew Jackson to victory in the Battle of New Orleans, Adair County Democrats had good day with party conventions. How Mable and Ella Conover separated their bulls and cows. How dangerous it must have been for Mr. Grover Gilpin separating fractious Democratic camps.
Comments re article 50969. The year when Democratic precinct conventions were Huge Deal

By Victoria Pike

We didn't quite have that type of turnout yesterday for the conventions as the one in that mysterious year referred to in "The year when Democratic precinct conventions were Huge Deal," but we did well for a busy day in Adair County and Kentucky.

Sure did enjoy reading how things use to be. I have heard tales of Miss Mable Conover being able to separate her cattle by telling the bulls to go one way and the cows the other but I didn't know that Mr. Grover had the same gift to separate opposing Adair County Democrats. I figure that could just be downright dangerous.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Through gaps unknown, a sonnet

Through gaps unknown
- a sonnet for Wendell five years after some words he wrote
What more desired can newly met declare
than helping each the other hear the drums
to understand the unfamiliar where
from which through gaps unknown the other comes.

What more unpleasant follows healthy first
than doubting silence gives but needed time
to know tight limits and to tame keen thirst
while feeling bad about oneself is chime.

What more can one expect in life's bazaar
than trusting self among both same and strange
to find the one who loves you as you are
continuing to love you as you change.

So genuinely feel the things you say
to best affect the risks along the way.

- Robert Stone, 1 April 2012

Carol Perkins: Only $29.99

The too good to be true Free offer was too good to be true. The devil was in the details, Carol Perkins discovered, with this caveat about Tv hustles (holds true for other media, including internet. -CM) The details on the $29.95 steal were, in reality, more like the price of an airline ticket to Texas. But to know details of the rest of the story, click on the headline for full column.

By Carol Perkins

I was all set to buy it. Guy handed me the phone, read the toll free number from the bottom of the TV screen as I dialed, and handed me his credit card. Only $29.99. Amazing offer for such an item. I predicted it would be more like $150 but then most paid programming items are $19.99 so $29.99 sounded like a steal!

JIM: 95 years ago. Adair was abuzz with talk of War

When President Woodrow Wilson called for a declaration of war and Congress approved - Adair Countians rallied to the cause, Jining up in great numbers. At least 400 residents and many more Adair Countians living elsewhere were in service by August 1918, and that number had grown to over 600+ by the war's end.A list of the (known) Adair County natives and residents who perished during the Great War while in the service of their country may be viewed at Adair Countians Who Died During The Great War (World War I). -JIM

By JIM

Ninety-five years ago this week, Adair County was abuzz with talk of America's entry into the Great War. President Woodrow Wilson spoke before Congress on the evening of April 2nd, 1917 to ask the House of Representatives to introduce a bill allowing the declaration of war on Germany. Reported the News, "It is said no greater paper was ever penned by man than the address of President Wilson to the American Congress..."
