By Chris Wells News from Lindsey Wilson College COLUMBIA, KY - The Lindsey Wilson College baseball moved into first place in the Mid-South Conference with a doubleheader sweep on visiting Campbellsville (KY) University Saturday, May 31, 2012, at Lindsey Wilson's Egnew Park. The Blue Raiders, who are riding a season-high 10-game winning streak, won today's opener 6-4 on the strength of Darren Travers complete game and the nightcap 4-3 on a walk-off single by Manuel Alonso. After beating the No. 13-ranked Tigers (25-10, 7-5 in the Mid-South Conference) 4-2 on Friday, Lindsey Wilson completes its first-ever three-game sweep of Campbellsville since joining the MSC. Travers (5-1) shut out the Tigers in eight of his nine innings to help the Blue Raiders pick up the 6-4 win. Travers allowed four runs -- three earned -- while scattering nine hits en route to his third complete game of the season. Travers had plenty of run support from the Blue Raider offense as LWC posted a six-run second inning off Campbellsville starter Michael McBride (6-1). The Blue Raiders (25-10, 11-4) pounded out eight hits in the inning -- all singles -- to take the 6-0 lead after two innings. After singles by Manuel Ozoria and Tyler Bernard to open the inning, McBride retired Lindsey Wilson's Dustin Murphy and Alex Harper. With two outs, Leandro Perez recorded the first of six straight singles to give the Blue Raiders the 2-0 lead. Adam Peacock followed with a RBI single while Alonso's single moved Peacock into scoring position for Drew Barrett's RBI single to push the lead to 4-0. Jeff Kerian followed by driving in his first run of the day and Ozoria closed the scoring with his second hit of the inning producing the sixth Lindsey Wilson run. Travers made the six runs hold up despite a small bump in the road in the Campbellsville fifth inning. The Tigers used the Blue Raiders station-to-station theory by producing five singles in the inning to cut the Lindsey Wilson lead to 6-4. While the Lindsey Wilson offense chased McBride after 1-2/3 innings, reliever Rusty Devitt was outstanding throwing 6-1/3 innings of scoreless, two-hit ball. McBride finished allowing six runs on nine hits. Following the fifth inning, Travers settled down by retiring 13 of the last 14 batters on his way to the win. Perez, Alonso, Barrett and Ozoria all finished with two hits in the game. In game two, Campbellsville jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run off Blue Raider starter Daniel Pulliam. Bernard tied the game with a RBI single in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. Following a Campbellsville run in the top of the second, Alonso provided a one-out double to score Kyle O'Hara and Perez to give Lindsey Wilson a 3-2 lead. The Tigers tied the game in the top of the fifth to set up Alonso's heroics. Prior to the final inning, reliever Lance Rose (2-0) held the Tigers to one run on three hits over his three innings of work after replacing Pulliam in the fifth inning. Pulliam - who picked up the save on Friday night - allowed two runs on five hits in his four innings. Perez delivered his second double of the game with one out in the seventh and final inning. Following an intentional walk to Peacock to set up the potential double play, Alonso singled back up the middle to chase Perez home for the 4-3 walk-off win. Ryan Richardson (4-2) suffered the loss allowing one run on three hits in his 1-1/3 innings of work in relief of starter Jacob Cook. Cook allowed three runs on five hits in five innings. Alonso ended game two 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Perez and Barrett each added two hits in the win. -CHRIS WELLS This story was posted on 2012-04-01 05:32:32
