Poetry by Robert Stone: Another Generation, a sonnet

Another generation
- a sonnet on the birthday of my great-niece
Today we celebrate the seventh time
Good Friday birth of girl with hair of red.
Two generations down I have to climb
to proper place her in the kinship spread.

Far ancestors are faint and faded dust
yet traces unrecorded hint their past
and stories handed down still making thrust
enlightening embellished may long last.

Now henceforth may there be the joys of growth
and living well and keeping caring close,
at ease in taking and in giving both,
the necessary cures in proper dose.

Another generation takes our place
and we must stand aside to give them space.

- Robert Stone, 25 March 2012

Beaver Envy spotted in Adair County, KY

Yes, they are the Animal du jour, but The Holler is a floral paradise, even without this noble creature.
Click on headline for Spring Scenes from The Holler

There's a hint of turmoil in Adair County since the early morning post of B.J. Fudge's paper on Traditional Beaver Lodge in a non-Traditional setting, and it's bad: Beaver Envy.

Shamarie Claiborne acknowledges no knowledge of any of the entertaining engineers in The Holler:
I see beavers are a top priority today... that is one thing The Holler doesn't have.... Beavers -- SC
Some would call her lucky. A pair of healthy beavers could turn The Holler into a Dale Hollow sized Lake of the Ozark, just as an elite Corps of Beaver Engineers once threatened Ray Williams Hill by damming up Neatsville. Anyway, at least she keeps her sense of humor, and sends photos of a more serene nature. -CM

100 years ago: Around town (ever so briefly)

March 1912 was a time of great cultural events, the Woodmen of the World fraternity was organized here, there were Anti-Saloon talks at both the Columbia Christian and Methodist Churches, and the News intoned a comment with a touch of Keynesian economic ideas

By JIM

Goings-on around the Square, late March, 1912

On Thursday evening, March 22, about 16 Lindsey Wilson lads put on a minstrel show at the courthouse. The show was well attended, and "the audience was well pleased." Reported the News, "There were many new and laughable jokes, the singing was good and the dancing easy and graceful."

Carol Perkins: At the end of the day

For her, even in 'retirement,' every day has to be one of accomplishment
The next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: English teachers

By Carol Perkins

As I watch UK and Western Thursday night, I couldn't help but think what it would have been like to have sold every person in that arena a shirt! Yes, my mind goes straight to shirts and to marketing. Does a person's job soon become her identity?

When I was thinking of a name for my business (once Uptown Designs and now Main Street Screenprinting), I almost went with "The Shirt Lady." I thought it was cute, catchy, and memorable, but then when I ran this by Guy, he turned up his nose. "Do you want to be known as the shirt lady?" Didn't bother me but evidently he thought it trite.

Last night sleepless hours produced this gem under the title of "honeymoon memories." The memory is 55 years old -- a mere "baby" as memories of an 85 year old geezer go.

Connie and I were married on the Memorial Day weekend of 1952. Because I had only been working at Phillips Petroleum Company less than a year, I was not vested with any vacation time.
