JIM: A Funeral in the Hills of Kentucky (1921) - An Ohion's Unkind Perspective It's a story about visitor's misperceptions about Adair County customs and ways, and practice of Christianity, misperceptions which were published in a denomination's house organ, then in the Adair County News along with just rebuttals, and which later drew a round of apologies from the author of the offending article, and higher ups in the church. Jim came across it in his research, It got him so riled, he wrote it, dispatched it. CM received it, and we're reprinting here without the more even tempered prior restraint from his cousin, Historian Watson, too. By JIM "August in the Piney Ridge country was also the time of revivals and great preachings. Big white tents mushroomed in the hollows and the ridges, each ministering to a particular neighborhood." -- Miss Willie (Janice Holt Giles). In the summer of 1921, a child (the name is unimportant) died in the Bearwallow community and in the custom of the day, the church filled for the funeral. In addition to the friends, neighbors, and grieving family members present, a small group of outlanders, "mission workers who were accompanying the [revival] tent," came to observe the funeral. In the group was 21-year-old Lela Fern Hoover, a Buckeye by birth and a student at Messiah College, Pennsylvania, who had a penchant for writing. A few months later, a vitriolic missive from her appeared in the Evangelical Visitor, the house organ of the Brethren in Christ. The only good thing she had to say about the experience was praise for the minister. Of him and his sermon, she wrote that< Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2012-03-18 18:20:37 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Jim: History
Happy ending: Finder reunites lost mother with puppies Lhasa Apso back with babies, thanks to Steve Strodtman of Columbia, KY. A little detective work solves dilemma. (With no help from CM. But we promise to do better). By Ed Waggener Here's a happy ending dog story: When Steve Strodtman found a Lhasa Apso, apparently a recent mother, he immediate placed an ad with CM, but for some boneheaded reason, it didn't get posted until today. In spite of that serious oversight, Mr. Strodtman just took matters into his own hands, did a little detective work, and got the mother back with her puppies. The Whitehurst Diaries: Old Timey Pear blooms early 'Last year the blossoms came too early and were nipped by frost. We hope the towering centenarian will be loaded with fruit this season.' -SHARON WHITEHURST, March 18, 2012 post Click on headline for diary entry, dateline, Gradyville, KY, March 15, 2012, with accompanying photo(s) By Sharon Whitehurst According to Haskell Rogers, who is not far from his own centenary, the Old Timey [Kieffer] pear tree in the accompanying photos was well established when he moved to the Gradyville area as a boy. JIM: The folk artistry of Mr. B.F. Chewning A note: This is a dandy Jim Gem, but he's also diligently working on a longer piece, which may be released to the General Public later during this Sunday with CM. It's basically up to his personal muse, Clio, but CM is on standby. -CM By JIM This short article from the September 1, 1920 News about the folk artistry of Mr. B.F. Chewning. (Perhaps you could call upon CM's editor to whimsically ask if any of Mr. Chewning's blade-art still exists.) Mr. B.F. Chewning of this place is very artistic in every thing he does, especially when he is using his pocket knife, the blades of which he keeps in perfect order. He is very fond of whittling, and usually keeps on hand a good supply of red cedar, and in whittling he invariably makes something either ornamental or useful: Butter paddles, tops for jars, imitation of the Red Eye Fish, charms and many other articles. He believes that when a man is occupying time, he should make something useful, and if he likes the pleasure of whittling, he gets that also.(At the time this article was written, Mr. Chewning, a Civil war veteran, was a lad of 76. He crossed the river the latter part of January, 1933, two days past his 89th birthday.) From Jim, proving ever again that Chance Favors the Prepared Mind - exactly why he was able to cover this timely Jim Gem, as so aptly described by his cousin, Historian Watson. And yes, folks, if anyone has information on Mr. Chewning's extant folk art, please apprise us. Who know's, you could have a fortune in your attic or on your parlor wall, just waiting for Antiques Road Show. - EW 2012-03-18 07:27:42 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Jim: History
