News From Laurel County: Need has shifted

Now the need is for things to help gain normalcy in the lives of storm victims: Household goods, cooking utensils. Now, monetary contributions will help most.
Checks made to the First Baptist Church of East Bernstadt, with notation "Tornado" should be sent to: First Baptist Church of East Bernstadt, 226 School Street, East Bernstadt, Ky. 40729. Donations may be left at Betty's OK Country Cooking, 2339 Campbellsville Road, Columbia, KY. Joe Hare's phone is 270-634-0285 -CM

By Joe Hare

I just talked with Billy Barnett in Laurel County again as he completed his round delivering things that had been left in the donation boxes, from around London and Corbin, for the tornado relief.

According to Billy the need has shifted from those things for cleanup and emergency to more of trying to gain some normalcy in their lives.

Col. Wm. Casey School reaches out to West Liberty Elementary

Colonel Casey School is collecting school supplies to fill a trailer Danny Pyles is letting CWC use to transport donations to West Liberty before the sister school's re-opening on March 19, 2012

By Patty Jones, Principal
Colonel Wm. Casey School, 220 Gen. John Adair Drive, Columbia, KY

Six degrees of separation is the theory that anyone on the planet can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of acquaintances that has no more than five links in between the two. Well, that theory has been reduced at Col. Wm. Casey this week.Anyone who knows or has worked with Dana Harvey, Title I Interventionist, at Col. Wm. Casey knows that she has a heart for reaching out to others. It only took minutes for her to realize once she heard about the tornados in our state to know that she had to reach out in some way.

Comments re article 50530 Laurel County KY Tornado Relief needs workers rakes

By Billy "B.T" Barnett

Thank you all!

We can use any and all help over here.

Everyone probably knows there were places that had more destruction than us but not more deaths; we lost five wonderful people.

The area hit was East Bernstadt which is a lot like parts of Adair County, off the beaten path, small community, some homes, a lot of trailers. Anywhere the storm hit is destroyed

Yes, town or county can be included in In Memory Birthdays

Another contributor from the CM Night Community just sent an In Memory birthday which prompts a clarification on the Special Events database: Birthdays, Anniversaries, and In Memory Birthdays.

Carla Aaron Grider writes (at 3:49amCT, 2012-03-10):
March 16
In Memory Birthday, Nora Ham Aaron, Russell Springs, KY (1911) - Carla Aaron Grider
Thanks, Carla Aaron Grider The In Memory Birthday is posted. And, while our policy is not to post hometowns for Birthdays and Anniversaries - Hometowns - may change for the living. But adding the hometown to the In Memory Birthdays gives so much added context that we encourage that, as Carla Aaron Grider did. For In Memory Birthdays for which we have obituaries, there is a link to the obituary, and we only post the date of birth, hoping that the obituary has the date of death. For In Memory Birthdays for which we do not have an obituary posted on CM, we like to list both the year of birth and the year of death. Thanks, again, Carla Aaron Grider, for this addition to the database. -EW

From the biggest Little Hearts: Aid to West Liberty, KY

By Rachael Bardin
News from Adair County Elementary School (ACES)

We already knew that Adair County School District students have the biggest little hearts around, but today our hearts really did melt as two children brought money from their piggy banks to share with West Liberty tornado victims.

We will be hand delivering this precious donation tomorrow along with about forty - fifty boxes of donated items and about 20 - 30 cases of water. As we were loading, we were truly astonished and were so grateful for everyone's generosity, kindess, and big hearts.

ACES would like to thank the students and parents and everyone who has helped make the food drive such an amazing success. The ACES family has always pulled together and helped those in need, and we are truly thankful for your generosity. - Rachael Bardin

JIM: A nugget from the past

This nugget appeared in the April 11, 1917 News
By JIM

Highest Point in the County

The village of Sparksville, eight miles from Columbia, is said to be located on the highest point in Adair County. Mr. Robert Strange, who is in the mercantile business at Sparksville, said, in our presence, last Wednesday, that on clear nights he could plainly see the arc lights, on Bomar Heights, this place.
CM Note:Fascinating nugget, Jim. Interestingly, while there are fabulous views from parts of greater Sparksville, the highest point in the county is in Breeding, KY, near the Breeding Fire Department Building. Adair County doesn't have anywhere near the tallest hill in the seven county area, but we do have a Mt. Fuji-like view of the most inspiring one, the tallest, in neighboring Casey County, the Green River Knob, Russell, Taylor, and Metcalfe also have higher points than Adair; Cumberland and Green's highest hills are lower. - EW
