Redear Sunfish: Epicurean of freshwater version of escargot

2012-02-17 - Salato Wildlife Center, Frankfort, KY - Photo by Pen.
The fish with a kindly Winston Churchill face like that of a favorite bulldog, unless you are a snail or mussel, or other aquatic being with an exoskeleton when this fish has the countenance of your end time - it has likely come to eat you. Redear Sunfish are like bluegills except they are a little better and have rouge or red ear shaped gill lining, They are found throughout Kentucky and epicurean delights, themselves, as panfish - fileted, lightly coated in cornmeal, fried, and served with cornbread or hushpuppies, slaw, greens, corn on the cob, rice and beans or french fries, hot black coffee or fresh brewed iced tea, and blackberry cobbler. This one, above, at the Salato WIldlife Center, is off limits, living the fish equivalent of Secretariat "retired" at stud. Salato WIldlife Center is named for a beloved Columbia, Adair County, KY physician, Dr. James C. Salato, for whom the Adair County Health Department building at 801 Westlake Drive, Columbia, KY, is also named. - Ed Waggener

The Wayfaring Stranger weighs in on Kentucky neutrality

The Wayfaring Stranger writes:
Mr. Editor:

Abraham Lincoln is famously (and perhaps correctly) quoted as saying, "I hope to have God on my side, but I must have Kentucky," and "have Kentucky" he did -- by dint of military police force -- for the better part of the war. (In mid-1864, Lincoln appointed Brigadier General Stephen Burbridge as military governor de facto if not de jure; over the next several months, "Butcher" Burbridge on no fewer than three occasions effected the arrest of Mexican War and Civil War hero Frank Lane Wolford.)

It occurs to this wayfaring stranger that the arrival of the Civil War history-to-go panels in Columbia so soon after the celebration both of Dr. Martin Luther King day and Lincoln's birth date should give one pause for thought: Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, which went into effect on January 1, 1863, freed only those men, women, and children enslaved in the Confederate-held states. Since Kentucky was under Union control, human bondage in the Bluegrass State did not end until the cessation of hostilities and the ensuing ratification of the 13th amendment in 1865. --The Wayfaring Stranger

News from the Kentucky Dept. of Highways, District 5

LOUISVILLE, KY (Feb. 17, 2012) - The "Singing Bridge," a local landmark in downtown Frankfort, KY, will be closed beginning March 1, 2012, for repairs and repainting.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) awarded a contract for the project to G-Force Contracting, of Campbell, Ohio. Cost of the project is $1.26 million.

The bridge, which carries U.S. 60X, is scheduled to close to vehicles and pedestrians at 6amET/5amCT, on Thursday, March 1, 2012 and will remain closed until late summer. Crews will paint the steel truss and perform some minor repairs to the steel grate on the bridge deck.

G-Force Contracting will be providing shuttle service to pedestrians needing special assistance in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). To receive this free service, pedestrians should call Frankfort Transit at 502-875-8565. Signs will be posted at each end of the bridge advertising this service.

The starting date and duration of work may be adjusted for inclement weather or other unforeseeable delays. Wants more information about ACHS Jazz Band

Comments re article 50068 Jazz Band fundraiser at ACES Friday February 17 2012Charles Marshburn writes:
How about some information about the Adair Jazz Band? How many members? What instruments? New Orleans type jazz? St Louis type jazz? How old are the members? What is their background? Where do they hail from? How long have they been playing as a band? Nope, we from off don't know these things! Charles Marshburn
Maybe someone will answer, and I hope they do, but you might also spend $10-20 bucks for two, or more, depending on your generosity, go, eat, listen, and find out at the event, if all else fails. -EW
