The first Clerk of the Court of Adair County was William Caldwell, who was appointed by the Governor upon creation of the county. At that time, under the second Constitution of Kentucky, the Clerk was to serve for both the County Court and the Court of Quarter Sessions.

Review of Robert Straus book brings back memories of UK Dental

Roger D Smith DMD writes:
Ed, The dental school at the Medical Center started in 1962. It was just so very big for a country boy like me to take in. The days were long, the studies difficult, but the staff was very special. As students I don't think we really knew how fortunate we were to be taught by the level of instructors brought together in that one building. Many have gone on to be highly recognized in the academic world.

I will never forget seeing Mr. Chandler walking through the dental school and often asking where you were from and how you were doing. He discovered I was from Adair County and never let me forget that he knew Grover Gilpin. I do know that he was very proud to have his name associated with the center. Those four years shaped my life in many ways besides dentistry, and I can never repay the school or the leaders who made it possible for the opportunity that it afforded me. --Roger D Smith DMD

Rob Stout takes CM with him to Ohio County, KY

Rob Stout writes:
Dear Ed,
Thanks, and keep up the good work! I live in Ohio County now, but I check Columbia Magazine often. I don't know any other journal that features local news, photography for the sake of artistic merit, recipes, original literature and reflections on history, all updated continuously. CM is a real gift, and I hope no one takes it for granted. I think we all should be as quick to affirm as we are to complain, so here is a token of thanks from a grateful reader. Many, many thanks!Peace,-Rob Stout
The big thanks, of course go the other way, to you. The success of the magazine has been dependent on the input of many, many people. CM readers are thankful for all the help you've given the magazine over the years and for helping our band and athletic teams in visits to communities you've served as pastor. I hope we and our community can reciprocate. - Ed Waggener
