Thinks drivers need educating: meaning of double yellow lines

Jennifer Parker writes:
Ed, I'm thinking a campaign to educate Kentucky drivers what a "double yellow line" is painted on the road for would be a great idea. Time and time again I see people passing regardless of the road regulations. Again, this morning as I drove KY 61 S. to Columbia, I watched a driver pass in a double yellow zone. It seems people are in such a hurry they constantly disregard the law. So SCARY!! They have no respect for the lives of other drivers. It seems if statistics are kept that a majority of accidents are due to those crossing into the path of others coming the opposite direction. I wonder how many are due to illegal passing? - Jennifer Parker
Thanks, Jennifer Parker for voicing another concern for safety on our roads. One wonders if there would be any collisions, any fatalities, on Adair County roads if sensible speeds were observed, if attention were given to maintaining intervals, and if full attention were given to the operation of properly maintained vehicles.? It certainly wouldn't be the carnage we record far, far too often. Thanks. -EW

Martin Luther King, Jr.: His passion made him voice of oppressed

An Adair County High Student searches for the source of the greatness Martin Luther King, Jr. and finds surprising answers to why this man, a nobody just like the rest of us, a man born with the same amount of courage we all have, but, she says, followed his dream, the advice of Dr. King. When your cause appears, do not wait for someone with 'more courage,' to change the tide. Find your voice. Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California all the way to Stone Mountain in Georgia. Let freedom ring, resounds in this remarkable essay, by a remarkable rising Adair Countian, about this most remarkable American hero.

By Heather Jackson

I am nobody. I am skin, I am eyes, I am bones, but I am nobody. Don't consider me grim. For I think you are nobody too. We are all just forms and figures that move about our daily lives with the occasional glimpse at the idea of being "somebody."

Gov. Beshear: Deep, painful cuts required to balance budget

Says most agencies will see cuts of 8.4 percent in 1st year of biennium. Education and public safety spared deepest cuts. Little for infrastructure investments. New revenue sources needed, Governor says, and again calls for vote on putting gaming measure on ballot.

By Kerri Richardson and Terry Sebastian

FRANKFORT, KY - Governor Steve Beshear presented his biennial budget proposal to the General Assembly tonight, a budget he termed "inadequate for the needs of our people." The Governor pointed to slow-to-recover revenues and loss of one-time funds, combined with the lingering effects of a devastating recession, as the culprits for the dismal budget outlook.
