Poetry by Joyce Coomer: written after removal of trees

Lament for the library oaks
by Joyce Coomer
Each morning the past week
My eyes have viewed emptiness on the horizon
My heart has felt a void in the earth's soul
Where once stood mighty oaks
In front of the library

By Theresa Stotts

This is our home church, as beautiful as the scenery is on the outside; the people on the inside shine even brighter.

The feeling of time stopping is so real here.

I feel as if I have the blessed opportunity of attending church every week in Mayberry! For all of the people in this little church are just like a breath of fresh air from a better time.

What is even better is how they love everyone as if you were their family.

So, from all of us at Amandaville Christian church, thanks for the sweet words! If you ever wonder how it would be to attend church with Aunt Bee just stop by and see us on Sunday mornings at 10:00. --Theresa Stotts

(Ad) CM Classifieds. Amazingly fast results

The amazing thing about CM classifieds is how quickly they are posted, do their work, and are gone. The from a post to a transaction is often measured in hours, not weeks or days. Sometimes, they occur in minutes. We appreciate it so much when advertisers help us to keep CM Classifieds so fresh, with letters to delete, like this one:Kim Hadley writes:
Thanks for placing this ad for me! Just a little while after a very nice lady called and I got a bedroom set for a very reasonable price. Thanks again for posting for me. --Kim Hadley
CM Classified ads don't just sell bedroom sets. They match pets withowners. They find new owners for cars, trucks, boats, motorcycles and ATV's. They sell appliances. They find workers. They bring record numbers to events. They can raise church attendance. They can find lost items and people who have lost them. Frequently in must minutes. CM Classifieds: A whole new way of looking at advertising A great place to sell anything.

Jim's Tidbits reminds her of family ties to Columbia mill business

Her Uncle Joe Knifley was a partner in group which bought Mr. G.B. Smith's two mills - the one in town and the one on the creek - in Columbia in 1921

Sue Sherman formerly Sue Ingram writes:
I just read with interest about the mill sale (JIM: Tidbits from History). One of the purchasers was Joe Knifley, half brother to my Dad, John Ingram. Uncle Joe Knifley was a mill owner for many years after which he and his wife, Elva Murrell Knifley, became employees of the Bank of Columbia. Joe and Elva were parents of Libbie Knifley Rogers and grandparents of Debbie Rogers Hall. Thanks for the interesting articles you print. I very much enjoyed the Christmas stories about the Waggener family. --Sue Sherman formerly Sue Ingram
Thanks, Sue Ingram Sherman. Thanks for bringing back wonderful memories of all these wonderful people, especially of your father, John Ingram. - EW

Smokie, Downtown Dog of the Night, has heroic story to tell

Something in Smokie's eyes celebrate the special bond between dogs and good humans. Those eyes connect and compress the ontogeny of the species, which more than any other - connects with humankind; in a brief moment, Smokie's eyes express how this special being - which loves humans even more than their own kind - has evolved. The eyes reveal the story of gratitude to compassionate human, and never betray the fact that this dog, this great Adair Countian, Smokie, continues to suffer from a single pointless act of human violence. Richard Bartlett tells the heartwarming story of his friend's dog, and suggests that, from time to time, there'll be chance to meet Smokie, downtown by the Fountain, frequently of a Friday evening. -EW

By Richard Bartlett

The dog in the photo would be my friend's dog.

He belongs to Dan Affolter of Breeding, KY who owns the Easy Rider Motor Sports shop right next door to the Breeding, KY Post Office.

Dan's dog is usually with him when he is inside Moore's Pool Hall right by the Movie Theater by the Square. The dog's name is Smokie and the reason why he limps is he has arthritic condition.

Driving Warning: Thick fog, thin skim of windshield ice early A.M.

National Weather service in Louisville, KY, in addition to the Sage of Sycamore Springs, has issued a Dense Fog Advisory for South Central Kentucky, including CM 7-County area counties of Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Metcalfe Counties in South Central Kentucky
Without saying it outloud, Sage suggests that protection of brass monkeys' precious danglings may be in order for February, 2012. -CM

By Cynthia A Meyer

SYCAMORE SPRINGS, KY (2011-01-10/12:34amCT) - You might want to give warning to your readers to leave a few minutes early in the morning, as there is thick fog out there tonight, (even a thin skim of ice on the windshield.) The fog reminded me of old folk wisdom that " A January fog will freeze a February dog..... " And although many do not believe in the folk wisdom handed down from generation to generation, I have seen it ring true more times than not.

It seems the adage about "Thunder in the fall, no winter at all," is holding true this year, as I heard a low rumble from the Heavens during a rain shower back in November. So if this be the case, allow me a moment of my physic abilities to look into my crystal ball, and feel it is safe to say that the old Punxsutawney Groundhog will see his shadow come the first of next month.

So be forewarned to have a good store of dry seasoned firewood in, a larder full of dried bean and bacon ( for a slow simmered pot of bean soup cooked on top the old woodstove) a sack of cornmeal, and all the other bare necessities of life to muddle through a few cold weeks yet to come later this winter. -Cynthia Meyer
