Meadow Hill Inn Placecard for Central Bus Lines kickoff dinner

2011-12-17 - Columbia, KY - Photo from Ann Curtis.
Central Kentucky Bus Lines was a business venture started by my father, David Heskamp, sometime in the 1950s. Here's a photo I found on a place card that was used at a kick-off dinner held at Meadow Hill Inn. The words on the side of the bus read "Louisville-Greensburg-Columbia." I wish I could provide more details, but that's about all I remember. -ANN HESKAMP CURTIS

Agrees with Roger position on hiring locally

Comments re article 48903 Roger comments on school building

Lois Cunningham writes:
I totally agree with Roger on hiring locally for the school project, but I am going to go one step further, as I think that all businesses here and around Columbia should try to hire local workers whenever possible. I saw a clip on CNN last week about Amazon warehouse in Campbellsville, and the special "perks" they give "migrant" workers they bring in to help during peak season. They provide free camping spaces, and utilities for the workers who come in their motor homes to work and then move on. They interviewed some of the workers and they come from Alabama, South Dakota, Mississippi, etc. etc. i am not complaining about Amazon hiring; I am wondering why they have to go across the country to do it, when there are lots of willing workers in Adair, Russell , and Taylor Counties and, by the way, save some of the Amazon money as local labor would not have to have camping spaces and utilities. Just wondering ... - Lois Cunningham
Thanks, Lois Cunningham. I think Amazon.com did an intensive search in the local area but did not find enough available personnel from the local labor pool. Workplace readiness is often a big issue when hiring. -CM

Identifications coming in for Central Kentucky Buslines photo

Some identifications are already arriving for the favorite old photo from Grissom-Martin Funeral Home. We'll add the newest at the top and link to the photo, and maybe we'll be able to get a pretty comprehensive list together.
To send an identification, click on the Comments button with the photograph, at Favorite old photo: Central Kentucky buslines

Don Knifley writes (2011-12-18):
I think I see Remus Howard in front row near left middle; also Sam Kelsay and Edd Janes in the back area, and Herb Howell on right end area. - DON KNIFLEY
Pat S Goodwin writes (2011-12-17):
My Dad, J. C. Sexton is in the middle second row looks like he has sunglasses on. --Pat S Goodwin
Trilby Vance writes (2011-12-17):
Ed, my Dad, Finis Albert Harvey, is in the back row, second from the right. Thanks! Merry Christmas! --Trilby Vance
Martha Berry writes (2011-12-17):
Ed, I may be wrong but that looks like my Dad (LWC President V.P. Henry -CM) on the back row under the windshield. I'm not sure if the timing is right because he and Mom left Columbia for a couple of years about that time and Dad was in poor health, but it looks like him, as far as I can tell. If someone else identifies that man, then that is ok, because, as I said, I am not sure all the dots are connected for that to be Dad. --Martha Berry

JIM: The General Gifts a Gavel

By JIM

From the December 23, 1914 News:

A Rare Gavel

Attorney General James Garnett was in Washington, DC, last week and while there he went out to Mt. Vernon, where George Washington, the father of our country, is entombed, and also his beloved wife, Martha Washington. While there he purchased a gavel, the wood taken from a tree growing in the sacred spot. Tradition says that while President, George Washington was Master of Alexander Lodge [of F & AM], located in the Capitol.

The gavel was mailed to Geo. E. Wilson, Secretary of Columbia Lodge, No. 96, who will present it, with General Garnett's compliments, at the meeting to be held the evening of the 26th inst., the annual election of officers. It goes without saying that the Lodge will highly appreciate the gift.

(At the above-mentioned election, the following men took office: Horace Jeffries, W.M.; W.H. Sandusky, S.W.; J.D. Lowe, J.W.; J.N. Murrell, Treas.; G.E. Wilson, Sec'y,; J.A. Willis, Tyler; John Sandusky, S.D.; W.I. Ingram, J.D.; Gordon Montgomery & W.T. Price, Stewards.)

Thanks, churches, for making CM Events work so seamlessly

The Old Time Religion and Modern Times: Street and Number = Chapter and Verse? The easy way to find things
Have a Church Event coming up? This weekend? We'll do our best to post it. Submit using any Contact/Submit Button

You have to hand it to the Old Time Religion. We think it is the reason why ministers and churches have so seamlessly moved into the modern communications ages. And why they've led the way for the spectacular success of CM's Events listings.

I think it has to do with the Bible Drills. Chapter and Verse. Give that to any regular Sunday School student and they find the reference in less time than anyone could on a computer.

We want to thank the Adair County Ministerial Association and all other church leaders for supplying ColumbiaMagazine.com with the content we need for our Events listings. For always including Street and Number, the time, the day of the week, the event, and contact information to allow CM to post so much so seamlessly. Thanks. -EW

Dr. Smith comments on school building

Comments re article 48891 Guest Commentary Let Mike Newton LWC do it

Roger D Smith DMD writes:
Dear Ed:

Your brother Ralph brings some interesting points to ponder on the new school building, and I have one more. Since this is our taxpayer money that will be used and the Board is our elected voice, I feel that it would be only proper that they insist that a high percentage of workers and building supplies should be sought from local sources. It is very troublesome to me that this is never brought up or considered by those who propose these types of construction. In these pressed economic times it would surely help those who will be responsible for paying the bill!

What opinions do others have?

--Roger D. Smith DMD
Thanks. Your idea for more local business is a good one. Actually, Board Member Mike Harris promoted just such an idea in selecting Branscum Construction for the construction manager for the new elementary school. Branscum is located just 14 miles from Columbia, the closest of any of the bidders. It will be interesting to see if the Adair County School Board can have as much local content as Mike Newton has in the construction of buildings at Lindsey Wilson. -EW
