Christmas on CM: Have a special, Christmas memory or story?

If you have a special Christmas memory or story, why not share it with CM readers. Some ideas:
  • Letters to Santa: Christmas to many is about the Birth of Christ. But it also means the twinkle in a child's eyes with anticipation of toys. Whether the letters are from individuals or from school groups, we'll do our best to post them

  • Christmas Memories: Every year, CM runs stories of Christmases past. Memories from when times were hard. Memories of a first bike. Memories of making do. Memories of food. Memories of reunions. Some favorites in our archives will be linked. Some will be replayed. We'd like to add some new ones.

  • Christmas Plays and Events: Remember to post them. Many readers like to plan as many church and school events as they can work into their schedules. If your church, school, or organization is having a special Christmas program, please send. And remember to include times, dates, street number and address, and names of performers and photos with names. We hope to hear from groups all over the Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell and Taylor Co., KY, areas.

  • Free Christmas Cards: Christmas Cards, photos especially decorated from families, will be posted free,, courtesy of special sponsors, as space allows and as they fit ColumbiaMagazine.com needs and formats. We've already received a few. We hope you'll send yours. Faces should be identified.

  • Christmas Wishes from Businesses, Organizations, Elected Officials and Professional People are available on CM, as paid advertising from $9. up.

  • Christmas Lights and Displays: Some Christmas Lights photos are already posted. If you spot a special display, and you'd like to try your hand at photography. More and more South Central Adair Countians seem to be enjoying. So everyone will know how to drive and plan the best routes for Christmas lights, please include Street Numbers and Addresses for the displays. It's the courteous thing to do.

  • Christmas Poetry. Yes. Please send. We'll post as it is possible. Christmas just seems a perfect season for verse.

  • Christmas Front Page timed announcements: Yes. They're available on an hourly, special hour each day, daily, and around the clock basis. It's a big deal. But there hasn't been any big fuss about it. It's just another of the ongoing changes made in an effort to make CM a more effective option for you.

  • Christmas Special Hours and Closings: Yes, we'll be posting those, too

  • Christmas Classifieds: Many categories of CM Classifieds are free. Some have very small fees. All have a big impact.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Too little and too much

Too little and too much
-a second sonnet for Edith Briggs
Too young, too old, no age will suit the one
whose lack of satisfaction is within.
Too light, too dark, no feature will be spun
to other than not quite enough to win.

Too short, too tall, no height will fit desire
whose definition is not founded sure.
Too thin, too thick, no type will like inspire
in one who thinks perfection is the cure.

Too weak, too strong, no grasp will calm unsafe
whose doubts reflect their litanies of life.
Too soft, too loud, no sound will comfort waif
for whom the past foreshadows coming strife.

Remembered words are often not the same
as what was said yet much our future claim.

- Robert Stone, 11 December 2011

Chuck Hinman: IJMA No. 128 - You're not Santa Claus

Chuck Hinman's It's Just Me Again No. 128: You're not Santa Claus. You're Chuck Hinman

By Chuck Hinman

You're Not Santa Claus : You're Chuck Hinman

It was Christmas eve day in 1950, almost 60 years ago. I was 28 years old, single and assistant manager of the Montgomery Ward store in Fayetteville, Arkansas. I had a few days off and was hustling trying to get home near Liberty, Nebraska in time to attend the traditional Christmas Eve program at the Liberty Congregational Church. It was the church where I had grown up in the 1930's. I have a ton of happy memories of those days.

Respected ornithologist speaks to Milamor issue

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Milamors are clearly, vaguely defined but to the best of my knowledge, they typically show up in front yards to show off for the passing public. Occasionally they can be seen around businesses and in back yards, around patios and the sort.

However, the huge impediment to Milamor viewing this time of year is "holiday yard art." Holiday yard art tends to occupy all the front yard habitat to the exclusion of Milamors. Holiday yard art tends to lay around all day and then puts on a somewhat inflated, gaudy display in the early evening hours. Milamors, although more terrene, seem to display whether night and day.

When I last checked Dr. Aaron's waiting room was a refuge for many displaced Milamors. On second thought, maybe they are not displaced but just choose that habitat to display for an appreciative viewing audience. -BILLY JOE FUDGE

JIM: History notes on the Montpelier Diamond

By JIM

A historical marker in Russell County, not far removed from Adair, succinctly recounts the story of the Montpelier diamond:

In the summer of 1888 on the farm of Henry Burris, two miles north, a brilliant stone was found. It was appraised gem quality diamond, octahedral in form, 0.776 carat by G. A. Schultz, a jeweler of Louisville, who bought it for $20. Diamond is now on display in the Smithsonian Institution. No other has been found in area although many have searched.

The OC foresees tooth doctor/game warden issues re: Milamor

OC writes:
I am thunking now that a search of world famous and local former varmitoligist W.K. "Billy" Neat's archives may be better that Google. The only problem I am afeared is that it might show that the varmint would favor either a local former game warden or a local tooth doctor. - Old Coddger

Mark Hale comments on school buildings

A Differing Viewpoint: This is Mark Hale's opinion, which we respect, but it differs a great deal from our own. CM is for the new school, for more local funding for local schools, and we believe the key to economic development is better public education. What we do have in common with most here is to have more local control of the schools - and that necessarily entails taxes. -EW

Personal commentary

I have been saying it for about a year now." As soon as they get CW Casey replaced then they would start telling us how bad of shape the John Adair building is in."

Birds of KY: Roger Smith wants info on Milamor

Roger D Smith DMD writes:

Ed - This morning while enjoying morning coffee I happened to be in the company of retired game warden and revered amateur ornithologist Ralph Jackson and learned of a new fowl that had migrated into our area. Being Ralph, he would not go into great detail about the bird, but on prodding he did say that the bird was a Milamor.Since many of your readers, as well as myself, would be interested in the identifying marks of this fowl I appeal to you to investigate this sighting. -ROGER D.
