Sharon Whitehurst renders wonderful read-aloud poetic prose

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
One of the most poetic renditions of prose I've had the pleasure of reading. I read it aloud to me, myself and I and the three of us agreed that it flowed from the tongue with the greatest of ease and pressed my imagination button on every graphic and symbolic description. - BILLY JOE FUDGE

JIM recalls worker who replaced basket atop courthouse

Comments re photo 42845 Scenic Adair Co KY Things in the middle of the roadBy JIM

This photo brought to mind an article from the Dec. 3rd, 1941, Adair County News concerning a recent visit by a former Columbia citizen, Mr. Louis (L.V.) Hall, and made me wonder if some of his handiwork were visible in the picture.

Mr. Hall was a tinner by trade who blew into Columbia in the closing days of 1899. Less than a year later, he had wooed, won, and wed Miss Lillie, a daughter of Laura and the late Andy Powell. The young family departed Columbia about 1911 and by 1914 they resided near Dallas, Texas.

The above-mentioned article read, in part:

"Mr. Louis Hall of San Angelo, Texas, was the guest of friends here Thursday and Friday...his first return trip since 1911... He recalled replacing the iron grillwork basket atop the Court House 41 years ago with the aid of J.F. Patteson."

Careless Driver killed beloved family pet in The Flatwoods

'Want to be NASCAR driver' didn't even stop to see what he/she had hit

Beverly England writes
Last night around 8pmCT on KY 61 in the Flatwoods community of Adair County a family pet, Ozzy, was struck and killed by a "want to be NASCAR driver" driving a truck and boat going at a high speed.

The dog had escaped from the owner and we were in the attempt of getting the dog home safely. The dog was struck wih everyone watching. The driver did not even stop to see what he/she had hit. What if it had been a child or adult.

People drive down this road at high speeds all of the time. No only are animals in danger, but adults as well. Please slow down! -BEVERLY ENGLAND

Agrees with Maury E. Lewis on welcoming center

Linda Waggener writes:
I agree with Maury E. Lewis.. The courthouse rental income should pay for one office to be a welcome center staffed by someone with a wealth of knowledge about Adair County and a deep love of his or her fellow man and woman. Sylvia with the giant corsage comes to mind. -LINDA WAGGENER

Poetry by Robert Stone: The present is the only present

The present is the only present
- a sonnet inspired by a previous sonnet: Is it really
Too many things already crowd my space
and more seem poised to slip around my guard
but no delay is what I want to pace
resolving peace of expectation scarred.

Too many words are clinging to my time
and more are waiting for their chance to shout
but silence yet is what I wish to chime
the unheard hours of self-inspiring doubt.

Too many hopes continue holding fast
and more await their chance to cling and cleave
but sad uncertainty is what I asked
unwilling to renounce all I believe.

The present is the only present safe
from was and will be maybes which may chafe.

- Robert Stone, 27 November 2011

A CLASSIC TOM CHANEY COLUMN, Of Writers and Their Books. R738, A celebration of many of the themes permeating CM this fall: Simplification. Enjoyment of old fashioned values. Even of Small Business Saturday. Editor Robert Stone says, "I think it may be the best of all Tom's columns" - mighty high praise considering the world class standard of Tom Chaney's works. Seize the Day!

The holidays are upon us again. We've got by Thanksgiving with Christmas and the New Year hoving into view.

For many of us, this time of year is a depressing time -- one which should be filled with joy. The sense of the harvest celebration of Thanksgiving plenty is pretty much lost in a world where turkey is frozen in the meat counter and corn comes in cans.

The Whitehurst Diaries: Sandhill Cranes Migration

'The birds winged through cloud wisps and jet trails over Big Creek Valley, veering southwestward' - SHARON WHITEHURST
Click on headline for story plus photos

By Sharon Whitehurst

The slanting November sun had made short work of the afternoon and was already sliding toward the trees that mark the western boundary of the farm.

Jim and grandson Devin were stacking firewood while indoors I cleared a project from my desk. A shout from outside sent me flying to the back door where the men were pointing at the sky.

CAROL PERKINS: Las Vegas Part II, The Shoes episode

'Not many women ever have enough shoes. It is a given just as men never have enough tools,' Metcalfe County world traveller writes in this second installment of her trip with the Guy & the Sisterhood
A followup to last week's column, Carol Perkins: Las Vegas trade show

By Carol Perkins

The annual trip to Vegas (continuing from last week's story) usually finds me occupying myself during the day while Guy attends the trade show. This year, with my friends along, we filled each day to the brim. One of our goals was to go to the Fashion Mall (near the Wynn) and buy shoes. The Aerosole Shoe Store always has a good sale; so one afternoon we hopped a cab and went to the mall. With all else to do in Vegas, we end up at a mall!

Review of Judy Somerville Christmas Classic: Tiny Tears

Besides being a great writer and story teller and singer, the author stands tall as an individual - 'doing things that must be done one way or the other' - for others.
Comment on 2011 CM Christmas Anthology: Tiny Tears - memories of Christmas past A CHRISTMAS CLASSIC by Judy Somerville

George Rice

Wonderful story by Judy about her Christmas doll, but it is only one of the many stories that Judy can tell. After working with Judy for about 20 years at the post office I have seen a Judy Somerville many never see.
