JIM: The News dispenses advice

By JIM

Found in the November 5th, 1919 News

Some things are timeless...

If you like your town, say so.

If you don't, keep still and try to improve whatever does not suit you. Remember that when you start knocking the town which you live in, you are also talking against yourself, your family, and your business.

If other places seem more desirable than your own home town, it is only because they are at such a distance that you cannot perceive their imperfections. You are living now in the best town on earth. Tell people about it.

Either side of counter, texting is rude

Dave Burton writes:
Yes, V. Price, had every right to be grumpy and complain! I would've just turned around and immediately complained to the supervisor/manager of the store. That is unacceptable service! The same goes for the customer as well - please do not text when you're being served - it's rude whichever side of the counter you're on. --Dave Burton

Texting Generation is making her an old grump

Had to wait in checkout line for employee to text.

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Texting! I really get grumpy when you are waiting in line -the only one in line - to be checked out of the grocery the other day, and the checker was texting on her phone and I had to ask her if she would mind taking the time to check me out and just call me an old grump! And to make matters worse, she had the nerve to say, "In just a sec." Do I have a reason to complain? Or is it just some grumpy person? Thank for letting me tell soeone who just might listen to it; not that it is going to change the Texting Generation. -VON PRICE, Louisville, KY

Greatness: Writer suggests CM Congratulations Registry

The Adair County Band's epic achievement at Bowling Green, KY, qualifies it for Greatness. Billy Joe Fudge says a CM Congratulations Registry is in order and asks CM Sign him up. With his help, we've added the Congratulations Registry, which will be or begin on the front page of CM today and then moved to the CM Stories Archive later.

By Billy Joe Fudge

Only a few times in my life have I encountered what I might consider to be greatness.
  • The super horse, Secretariat winning the Triple Crown; who could ever forget that emotional victory in the Belmont Stakes
  • The UCLA Bruins back to back undefeated seasons and that amazing 88 game winning streak are a couple that come to mind. I loved Secretariat and hated the Bruins, but greatness is greatness regardless of feelings
  • Twenty state championships in twenty-six years for the Adair County Marching Band, I think, would have to rate right up there toward the top of anyone's Greatness List.
If CM has a Congratulations Registry in which folks can comment and sign wherein they can pay their respects to this amazing band in all it's facets; sign me up!!! -BILLY JOE FUDGE

George Rice no longer supports idea of Halloween

George Rice writes:
I appreciate the article that Sister Laura Harris has submitted on the history-origin of halloween. I, too -as most of us done - have had fun with tricks or treats, but as I have grown to an older age and became more aware of the original beginning of this occasion, as a child of God I do not want to participate in anything that would be displeasing to our Heaveny Father. So Sister Laura I will help in a small way to paddle that boat upstream with my feeling about halloween.

lee barko agrees with Rev. Harris on Halloween

lee barko writes:
Rev. Harris is right. As Christians, we should never attempt to touch or make use of in any way a pagan symbol or practice: these are of their very nature devilish and contrary to Gods love, God's way and God's requirements for leading a life according to His word. They cannot be cleansed of their evil by ignoring their intended purpose and calling it a harmless children's holiday. What is harmless in allowing children to go from house to house demanding "treat" and threatening tricks if they are not given them even if the threat is not serious? Is making children into liars a harmless thing!

Good Christian people: Rev Harris has pointed out our duties; heed her. - lee barko
