Adair Co. Salutes Dakota Meyer: Sheena London, David England

2011-10-02 - Robert L. Miller DR, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Sheena London, a member of the residence hall staff at Lindsey Wilson College, is in charge of traffic control at the Robert L. Miller Drive entrance to Blue Raider Stadium. She's pictured with David England, Winchester, KY, who was in Columbia with one of the earliest waves Patriot Guard Riders (PGR), helping line the procession path along which Adair County native Dakota Meyer, Congressional Medal of Honor winner will ride. London, from Hiseville, KY, is a graduate of Lindsey Wilson College. England said that he expects as many as 400 riders today. The number is growing in part because of the absolutely perfect October 2, 2011 Day. Parking for dignitaries and others taking part in the ceremony will take much of the Miller Park capacity, but clearly marked empty lots along Russell Road and Jamestown Street are available for the overflow, and shuttle busses will be carrying spectators to Blue Raider Stadium, 820 Hanley Lane, for the 2pmCT main ceremonies.

Carol Perkins: The measure of a man

'Dakota Meyer: The world is amazed and happy, but we Kentuckians are pumped up with pride.' -CAROL PERKINS
The next earlier Carol Perkins column: Calamity at the Checkout Counter

By Carol Perkins

The measure of a man is in his actions and not his words. Dakota Meyer is a man of great measure. Although we sometimes feel this world is short on men like him, I am positive great ones surround us but we may never know their heroic deeds.

Dakota Meyer acted unselfishly and valiantly and in disobeying an order, he acted with no concern for his own future. When he said, "I didn't wonder if I would die, but wondered when I would die," I thought about young men his age and wondered how many would have done the same.

JIM: The bungled Bank of Columbia burglary of 1921

Bank Robbing was big business 91 years ago. A quartet, apparently backed by a crime syndicate, came to Columbia and stayed in the Jeffries Hotel. They attempted to crack the wondrous new Bank of Columbia safe, but were frightened away by a group of young men up late playing Rook. The would be burglars fled, and the Rook players gave chase, while calls went ahead to Campbellsville and Lebanon Police. The latter sprayed the fleeing car with bullets, possibly killing three of the men, who were never heard of again. But one raymond Driscoll, was captured in Indianapolis and later fingered by a hostage/witness, Pete Garvin, and by the Jeffries Hotel proprietor, G.C. Jeffries. But well financed syndicate lawyers got Driscoll off with just a five year sentence, a slap on the wrist in the eyes of post trial opinionators in the Adair County News

One can only imagine the excited chatter on a cold Monday morning almost ninety-one years ago as word raced around the Square there had been an attempt to burglarize the Bank of Columbia just hours earlier.

The next previous Chuck Hinman column, Chuck Hinman IJMA No. 116: The Flour Mill at Blue Rapids, Kansas

By Chuck Hinman

Up until seven years ago (2004), I was coasting along in retirement with the common age-related infirmities. You know, stuff like hearing loss, blood-pressure a little on the high side, worn out knees but not bad enough to be replaced. I did not have any big stuff like cancer or diabetes. My life-style did not change from pre-retirement days. I had no need for aspirin, etc. for discomforts. I didn't have aches and pains and I attribute running three quarters of the way around the world in my running days for my longevity. Certainly I am not discounting the grace of God and His interest in my goings and comings.

Then this "new kid on the block" barged in and messed up my life. He goes by his initials, AMD. Let me tell you what happened.
