Rodney Thompson: The Greyhound brought Louisville Times

Rodney L Thompson, Sr. writes:
In the middle 50's I had the pleasure of working for the Waggener Enterprises in delivering the Courier and the now defunct Louisville Times. The Louisville Times was delivered by Greyhound six days a week to the bus station. Ralph Roy and I had numerous good times waiting for the bus to arrive, generally after we had been shooting pool at Bob's Pool room. -Rodney Thompson
Yes, and few people, especially Grover Gilpin, remember it, but it was you two who brought "the newspaper in your yard" concept to Columbia, with Ralph Roy throwing to yards on the right side from the left window, and Rodney L. Thompson throwing to yards on the left from the right window of a Blue Volkswagen Beetle traveling at 35 mph.

Jon Conover has never played a game for Lindsey Wilson College in Biggers Sports Center, but he still considers it to be part of his home court.

Since 1992, Conover, who works in LWC's Physical Plant, has taken care of Biggers Sports Center. During that period, he reckons he's seen "at least 500 games, if not more."

Dad had to come get him or he would have stayed in Florida

Writer remembers trip to Atlanta on Greyhound when air conditioning went out and windows couldn't be opened

Rick Caldwell writes:
In 1971 I rode the Greyhound from Columbia to St Petersburg, FL' to my brothers wedding. At about Somerset, the air conditioning went out and you couldn't open the windows on the buses.

We were burning up till we got to Atlanta, GA, where they gave us a different bus.

The only thing that saved a riot was a man in the back with a suitcase full of booze that he handed out; but being only 14 I had to sweat it out for - I can't remember how long- but was probably 12 hours. The bus stopped at every small town between Columbia and Atlanta.

My daddy came and got me when it was time to return to Columbia because I said I would stay in Flordia if I had to ride Greyhound back. -Rick Caldwell

Iron Man Micah Harvey more than fantastic sports hero

Above all he is one of the finest Adair Countians, ever

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Iron Man Micah, the only man alive or dead for that matter with a fall-away set shot for the lack of a better way to describe it. Seven-footers and vertical leap champions could flail away all day long to no avail in their attempts to block this monstrosity of a shot.

With all due respect to Adair County pivot men past, present, and future Micah Harvey must be at the top of the list when it came to work ethic, country boy strength and mental toughness. Yet best of all, Micah Harvey was and is one of the finest Adair Countians to ever lace up a sneaker. -Billy Joe Fudge

A classic Blue Raiders basketball game: A national championship

When Adair Countian Micah Harvey was a one-man wrecking crew. When, as Adair Countian Ed Diddle would have said, Pandum broke out in the stands 900 miles from Columbia in Albany, New York as Lindsey Wilson Coach Jim Voight's team won the National Championship. And the team was mostly local. With three Adair Countians, a Russell Countian, and a player from Bonnieville leading the way

By Anonymous Scribe

Albany, New York, March, 1972

Lindsey Wilson's heart-stopping come-from-behind victory over Shawnee state last night very nearly equals the Raider's greatest ever Hail Mary basketball win, a simply incredible game played nearly four decades ago

The Greyhound: When rider panicked on arrival in Columbia, KY

Comments re article 42530 Stuart Standafer drove Greyhound busses for 40 years

Ricky England Clutterbuck writes:
I remember riding the Greyhound Bus home to Columbia when I was in school in Louisville in the fall of '62 and in 63. If I wanted to come home for the weekend and couldn't find a ride, I would hop on the bus and make the long trip home. There were lots of stops and curves in the road. On one of the trips home, as we pulled upon the Square, the bus driver announced that we were coming into Columbia and it was the end of the line. There were no more buses out until the next morning. A gentleman sitting in the back of the bus got really excited and exclaimed that it couldn't be the end, that he wasn't where he was supposed to be. Turns out, he thought he was getting on a bus to Columbia, S.C. I was also one of the lucky students on the '62 Senior Trip of which Mr. Standafer was a driver. He made our trip much more enjoyable. What a great personality. -Ricky Clutterbuck
What a story! Thanks. Even without the great personalities, the Standafers had the greatest smiles; those were enough to make everyone feel better. Thanks. Just hope it doesn't hurt your Uncle Jimmy Firquin's feelings that there may be a story teller challenger in the family. Shouldn't. He still has that ex-sheriff, ex-Judge and now that head of the Clay Ridge Board of Trade going for him. -EW

Stuart Standafer drove Greyhound busses for 40 years

He was the driver for many ACHS senior trips to NYC and Washington during the 50s and 60s.

Frank Standafer writes:
The Greyhound driver Hunter (H. Hunter Durham, Esq. -CM) remembers as Stewart was probably my father Stuart Standafer. Greyhound would send a driver from Louisville to drive the routes when the regular drivers had their days off. Our family moved to Columbia 1954 when Mr. Morgan and another driver retired. Many of your readers may remember my father as the driver of their Adair High School senior trips to New York and Washington in the 50's and 60's. Our family moved to Lexington in 1963 when Greyhound made operational changes to the Columbia routes. He enjoyed his work and especially the people he would meet. He retired with 40 years of service in the 80's from Greyhound. He continued driving in retirement for Bluegrass Charters and Tours for several more years. Frank ('Frankie' while a little kid on Heskamp ST, Columbia, KY) Standafer
Thanks. Wonderful to hear from one of the all-time great Jamestown Hill boys, Frank(ie) Standafer. What a warm, wonderful contribution the Standafer family made while residents in Columbia! Miss them. The Standafer home on Heskamp ST still stands, and is now owned by Michael Stephens. -EW

Help! Bees are keeping birds away!

Comments re article 42526 Great Backyard Bird Count is underway

Pam Dailey-McNeiley writes:
Our feeders, tables and ground have been swarmed by bees keeping the birds away. I took the feed away yesterday trying to get them to leave, but today the bees are back and no birds. I tried a yellow jacket trap but none were interested; they look like a honeybee and I certainly do not want to kill them. Any suggestions out there? Can I put some food source a few feet away from the feeders that the bees would prefer so the birds will come back?Pam

Remembering Hughes Walker: Such a great friend

Von Price writes:
I am very saddened this morning to see that another one of my High School Classmates has gone. Hughes and I had Latin class together under Mrs. Kerbow. He was one of the most intelligent in our class.

We had been in contact via e-mail and it was just like the old days in High School. He always had a smile and I can never remember him ever and I mean ever talking about one single person, unless it was something nice that he had to say about them.

He was the most positive thinking and nothing negative ever was spoken. He will be greatly missed and I am so sad that I have lost such a great friend. My heart felt sympathy goes to his family. And I know that when other classmates hear of this they, too, will be sad. -Von Price, Louisville, KY

Wayne Armitage claims first count at Tucker's Station

By Barbara Armitage

The Count is ON!

Wayne is claiming the first count up here on the hill at Tucker's Station. He saw Cardinals, Song Sparrows, Robins, and Goldfinch at 7 am this morning. Of course I think that the fact that I made sure that all of our feeders were filled to the brim helped.

This is a beautiful day to be outside - go out and enjoy the birds! -Barbara Armitage

K. Davis used Greyhound until he got old enough to hitchhike

Adair expat in Louisiana recalls Greyhound as slow moving affair

Kenny Davis writes:
Ed, just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy reading the Magazine and keeping up with all the news. My sister, Deanna, told me about it a few weeks ago. I remember that Greyhound bus ride. It was a slow moving affair with all the stops and the crooked roads. I used it from the late '50s to around 1960, until I got old enough to hitchhike. -Kenny Davis
Thanks for the comments, and, reminding us of the once primary mode of travel, with one's thumb. Maybe someone will remember that era. Hope you're also reading South Central Kentucky's most influential print publication, "It's Just for a Smile News," by my little brother, Ralph Roy Waggener. Maybe he'll write the Kenny Davis story.. Getting wrote up in the IJFASN is considered by many to be on a par with getting wrote up by Byron Crawford. -EW.
