Thanks to Wayfaring Stranger for warm affirmation

Reading Janice Holt Giles influenced choice of home here

Sharon Whitehurst writes:
Thank You, Wayfaring Stranger, for such a warm affirmation.

We have always been "small town" folks and I know that (at least in New England) "in-comers" or "out-landers" can be viewed as invaders who upset the local economy and culture.

We thought first of finding a retirement property in NC - Jim's paternal family established there in the late 1700s, but KY seemed a better fit for the way we wish to live.

I read the books of Janet Holt Giles many years ago and when we homed in on south-central Kentucky, it was Adair County which drew us. -Sharon Whitehurst

Mother Nature Does Frosty Work

By Betsy Fausnaugh

Even though it was near zero last night mother nature was still busy making beautiful artwork in Gradyville, KY. This was some of the results done to my Pine trees. Who needs to buy flocked Christmas trees when Mother Nature does such a pretty job? -Betsy Fausnaugh

More of us need to be sharing memories

Sharon Whitehurst writes:
Billy Joe's poem evokes lovely images--as vivid as his photo.

I feel that more of us of a certain age need to be writing down and sharing memories like this with our families. So many family stories get lost.Today's tools give us many options to act as family "historians." -Sharon Whitehurst, Gradyville, KY

Wayfaring Stranger prefers Of Here to From Off

'Adair County is where their collective heart feels the tug of home' -WS

Wayfaring Stranger writes:
Editor Waggener:

Sharon Whitehurst's superb photos and essays are all the better for her seeing hill and hollow, stream and sky, kith and kin, through fresh eyes sparkling with excitement.

It occurs to this wayfaring stranger that while Ms. Whitehurst and any number of other Adair Countians may be from off, they're Of Here -- a fact, a *choice,* that far transcends place of birth (nothing more than an ephemeral quirk, happenstance of less note than a ship passing itself in the dark).

Adair County is where their collective heart feels the tug of home. To slightly paraphrase Mr. Charles Miller's recent comment about his beloved granddaughter, Miss Ruby Anne, "They're Adair Countians through and through."

Sharon Whitehurst: What winter reveals in nature

Click on headline for story + 18 photos

By Sharon Whitehurst

I'm a great believer in the benefits of getting outdoors on milder winter days, getting "aired out."

By mid-winter our eyes long for the green grass and leaves of spring and the reappearance of flowers in all their lovely colors.

There is beauty of a more subtle kind in the muted shades and textures of mid-winter. Sometimes there are surprises. During the summer I wasn't aware of a bird family inhabiting the tiny nest in the shrub that grows close to the west wall of the house.

List of photos in order as they appear below:

Sharon Whitehurst writes:
We are Vermonters by birth, but none too happy about the political and economic situation which has been evolving there. As to weather, anywhere in VT has long, cold winters. Guy always gets up much earlier than I do. He is perky in the morning; I am not. On one particular morning a few days ago, he was stretched back in the recliner when I dragged myself to the coffee pot. He looked whipped.

100 Years Ago: Columbia, KY, on the Precipice of Perdition

Introduction:This article is posted in a spirit of community betterment, not to steer things up. If Columbia, KY, tolerates the vices outlined by our spiritual leaders in 1911, what is to become of us next, in 2011? Men wearing short-sleeved shirts? Roller rinks? Beer with pizza? Mixed drinks - the gateway sin to the ultimate evil, Dancing? The late Pete Walker ended the argument for imbibing just a little - the suggestion of moderate (Satan's trick word) use of alcoholic beverages - once and for all. In his tenure as Intermediate Sunday School class teacher, he issued this irrefutable answer, "Can you murder in moderation"? Not a teenage boy in the class could answer that one. Sensing that we had learned that lesson, he would adjourn the session, pronouncing it a good Sunday School lesson, telling us we should adjourn to the G & M Grill and have a Coke, smoke, or play the pinball machine, while warning us we'd have to be back for church services. There was always a stern admonishment, in leaving, that we should step up the stairs in the manner of squirrel hunters, else, he predicted, "Avery (Ashbrook, the SS Superintendent) will catch you on the way out." That was in the 1950s. A lesson never forgotten, by any of us. But the fight never ends to keep this place a righteous. "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it," to quote or paraphrase George Santanaya. EW

The Warning Cry: Columbia Saved from the Precipice of Perdition and Pool Room

The following article, penned by local pastor J.R. Crawford, appeared in the Adair County News 100 year ago this week under the headline "The Churches and 1911."

If the spirit of earnestness which characterized the week of Prayer, just observed by union services in the local churches, is carried into the New Year, then there will be a moral and spiritual uplift for Columbia.

Temperature in Columbia, Adair Co., KY, was down to nothing

Billy Joe Fudge writes:

Thanks. It's been a long time since the temperature was nothing. Our barnhouse is a little airish this morning. Hope others are keeping warm. Just took a look at the Columbia Mesonet station and the lowest it recorded was 0.03 F, at 7amCT, Sunday morning, January 9, 2011. That's the only weather I trust. None of this rounding down stuff. -Ed

Shaken, not Stirred

I been thinking back to the golden days of the early 1960's. I had escaped from the clutches of the Baptist seminary in Louisville in part because I had read On the Road by Jack Kerouac, and in the second part because of a related sense that I had no business trying to tell anybody how to think and live.

Letting the scales fall away

The narrative in chapters 8 and 9 of the Book of Acts follows the story of Saul, a leading persecutor of the people who were followers of the Christ. After witnessing with approval the stoning of Stephen, Saul received letters of authorization to travel to Damascus and seize any Christians he found there. On that very road he was stuck blind by a flash of light and challenged by the voice of the Lord for his cruelty. Told to proceed to Damascus, he went to the city, blinded and unable to eat for three days.

Chuck Hinman: IJMA No. 089. Cutting wood in the winter

It's Just Me Again No. 089, Cutting wood in the winter, 27 November 2006
The next earlier Chuck Hinman story: My Foxy-Looking Teacher

by Chuck Hinman

Quite a lot of water has trickled down Wolf Creek since Dad, brother Bob, and I bundled up in warm under and outer wear and rode in a wagon pulled by Dick and Diamond to the timber on the rented "Fauver 80." Once there, we would cut wood to feed the gluttonous furnace of the Hinman household. It was a boring but necessary job if we were to keep warm. Bob and I were healthy maturing teenagers for which this was a Saturday ritual in the cold winter months when we were out of school.
