Carol Perkins: Lets talk . . . about Depps Restaurant

For Metcalfe County kids of the 60s, Depp's and Gene's Freeze (the latter still a popular Edmonton restaurant) were favorite hangouts. Robert and Nell Depp and their three popular children made everyone welcome. The food was generously served at reasonable prices, and it was delicious. "Those were good days and fun times and I am grateful to Robert and Nell Depp for putting up with us young people. I just wished I had told them," Carol Perkins writes in this article about memories which will be shared at the Metcalfe County Sesquicentennial and MCHS Reunion on Labor Day Weekend.

Depps Dump wasnt a dump at all. How this establishment came to be known among its younger patrons as Depps Dump, I dont know, but it did.

Maybe Robert Depp and his wife Nell, owners of the restaurant/grocery store, were offended by the name, but if they were, they never showed it.

Billy and I were not very close as college roommates. It was seventy ago. I was beginning my sophomore year at Peru (Nebraska) State Teachers College. We each had our own circle of friends.

Billy had a part-time job in the Peru newspaper office. It had no connection with the college.Delzell_Hall

Delzell Hall, the men's dormitory had just been completed in October 1939. It was a wonderful shiny new facility jam-packed with rambunctious young, mostly Nebraska boys who had in mind pursuing a school-teaching profession like their all-time favorite teacher.

Tom Chaney No. 267: Galilean Twins

Of Writers and Their Books No. 267, 29 August 2010. Galilean Twins a review on book by Phillip Pullman

The next earlier Tom Chaney review, Kentucky author A.B. Guthrie's works

By Tom Chaney
Email: Tom Chaney bookstore@scrtc.com

A week or so ago I stumbled upon an interesting sounding book which turns out to be a part of a British series which bears further reading. The publisher is Canongate and each of its myth series presents a reimagining of a classic story by a popular author.

Margaret Atwood retells the tale of Penelope and Michael Faber does the same for Prometheus. With those stories readers may be sort of amused, but when Philip Pullman fiddles with Jesus folks start gathering dry sticks.

I grew up with a fascination for trains. Grandfather, my father's dad, worked most of his life for the Louisville & Nashville (L&N) Railroad. My father had worked for L&N before he went to General Electric, where he stayed until retirement. One of the first magazines I remember reading was the L&N publication that came regularly in the mail and was filled with pictures of trains, old and new, as well as reminiscences and vignettes of railroad history.

Poetry by Robert Stone St. Sebastian

St. Sebastian
-a sonnet for Christopher Wendell Comperry
We do and then again we do not do
and are we ever fully wide aware
of what we're doing, pricked when up we screw
by stinging contemplative conscience bare.

Endure for choices other there are none
except illusions of a future realm
with second chances bright of races here not run
untouched by pains that pleasures overwhelm.

Express in face the longings of the heart
or face the world detached a lonely soul
devoid of mixtures curious that start
uncovering the joys we can control.

We each have placed the sharps where most they hurt
and daily wash Sebastian's blood-stained shirt.
