I was beginning my sophomore year at Peru (Nebraska) State Teachers College. We each had our own circle of friends. Billy had a part-time job in the Peru newspaper office. It had no connection with the college.Delzell_Hall Delzell Hall, the men's dormitory had just been completed in October 1939. It was a wonderful shiny new facility jam-packed with rambunctious young, mostly Nebraska boys who had in mind pursuing a school-teaching profession like their all-time favorite teacher. Billy's and my room was on the first floor overlooking the Oak Bowl football field. We were across the hall from the entrance to the huge bathroom on our floor. Each bathroom served about forty boys as I remember. There were three floors. The first thing I noticed on entering this palatial bathroom were glitzy marble walls, a far-cry from the outdoor toilet back home on the farm. But wait, there's more; each of the six private (with marble doors) stalls, was equipped with white porcelain stools with shiny black seats. What luxury! There was never any delay in the morning rush to be seated. Someone apparently crept into all three bathrooms in the early morning hours and painted the shiny black seats with printer's ink. You may not know that to say printer's ink is indelible is a gross understatement. IT IS FOREVER! It penetrates to the bone! They say it passes to the second generation offspring. I don't know that for sure. The prank was so insidious the victims didn't know immediately they had been the target of a cruel, albeit hilarious prank. Little by little as the showers on all three floors became as busy as Grand Central Station in New York City, here were all these weird creatures with black rings on their bottoms. It was like a special fraternity -- Beta Beta Beta (Black Bottom Boys). It took quite awhile before it was figured out "What happened." The answer became known within the hour. But the answer to the more important question, "But WHO did it," may have gone to the grave of that person without an answer. But I KNOW who did it! My long ago college roommate, Billy Berger of Nebraska City, is dead. I'll bet his grandchildren would howl with laughter if they knew this tid-bit about their old Grandpa! What a sly fox and just a little guy! Incidentally I was never a member of Peru's exclusive Greek fraternity - Beta Beta Beta, better known as the Black Bottom Boys!A revision of a story written by Chuck Hinman, Tallgrass Estates, November, 2007Chuck Hinman lives in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
