Family has some Lingan Wilson Selby memorabilia

Adair County's Lingan Wilson Selby Day, April 11

About: Gravestone of Lingan Wilson Selby

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

As you know, Ed, my brother and I are descendents of the Gilmers that buried Mr. Selby on their farm which we inherited. We were told many stories about him, and have pictures of the remains of his machine's stone shelter that was on the farm until it was buried in construction. He boarded with them and worked at his invention until his death.

s/Pat Bennett

Wonderful news about the stories, the photos, and the stone shelter. Any photos or news of this most memorable Adair Countian you might share would be greatly appreciated. I can't tell you how excited I was to see the gravestone the first time, remembering the accounts of Mr. Selby in Rachel Varble's historical novel about Jane Clemens, and also remembering stories told in Columbia Grade School and Adair County High School about the man. -EW

In the last week or so, a number of Adair Countians abroad have come back with reports about windmill farm sightings as they crossed the prairie cornland.

Peggy Spoon came home with some great photographs from near Sandwich and Dwight, Illinois. They accompany this article.

Pen noticed them on his way to and from Chicago, There is a huge installation north of Lafayette, he said. "They seemed to stretch as far as the eye could see," he said.

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I was reading the articles online and came across information about Lingan Wilson Selby. I was wondering if anyone had a photo of his headstone due to all the comments about what it should say on his stone. If so, how could we get a copy of the photo. We are descendants of Lingan and trying to learn more about him.

Thank you.
