Earliest oil well on Crocus Creek hit 174 years ago, in 1836

About: Hopewell Acres Oil Strike Amandaville KY

By John Chowning

The article on oil production on our farm mentions 150 years of oil production there.

According to information we retrieved a few years back from a University of Kentucky official who has worked on the history of oil production in Kentucky and in the Adair-Cumberland-Clinton counties section, the earliest oil well drilled on Crocus Creek was in 1836 - just seven years after the so-called Old American Oil Well near Burkesville which was discovered in 1829.

Says whisky is so made in Kentucky, even in Adair

Billy Joe Fudge suggests expanded Assimilation Academy curriculum

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Far be it from me to steer things up, but should someone ever so gently remind Mr. Fudge that whisky is made in Kentucky in the still of the night (so to speak) even in bone-dry, parched-throat Adair?

42-win CU baseball season falls short of NAIA World Series

42-win CU baseball season falls short of NAIA World SeriesCumberland (TN) advances to its 11th NAIA World Series

By Chris Megginson
News from Campbellsville Sports Information

JOLIET, IL - For 6 1/3 innings in the NAIA Baseball Tournament Opening Round championship, Campbellsville University sophomore pitcher Rusty Devitt was perfect against Cumberland (TN) University. Unfortunately for the Tigers, Devitt's 12-strikeout, three-hit performance was outmatched by Cumberland University's Aaron Wilkerson, who fanned a 2010 Tournament record 17 batters in a 3-0 Tiger loss.

With the win, Cumberland (53-9) advances to the Avista-NAIA World Series for the 11th time in program history, and the first time since 2007, while Campbellsville falls just shy of its second trip and finishes the year 42-22.

How one Concord became known as New Concord

About: Query: Needs information on distinction of the Concords Old and New

By E.H. Lepiarczyk II

For years confusion has been realized regarding the identities of the two Concord communities of Adair County.

I am familiar with one of them because my mother, Katherine Louise Grider Lepiarczyk, was born there. Today this community is known as New Concord.

The community began to be known as New Concord after the Concord School ceased operation sometime during the 1950s.

BJF suggests expanded Assimilation Academy curriculum

About: Conjecture on new plant wanting CACEDA to help it expand here

To Columbiamagazine.com:

It is quite apparent that we need to expand and or refine our Adair Assimilation Academy criteria to cover more state-wide materials and information. It is quite apparent that these deficiencies have caused Mr. Mashburn to erroneously assume that whiskey can be made in Kentucky. We all should apologize for not informing him that only Bourbon is made in Kentucky.

s/Billy Joe Fudge

Probably a good idea, though in all matters academic, we defer and refer to Dr. Johnny Vaughn, our learned Academic and Most Else Dean. -EW

Oil boom on Crocus Creek sharp contrast
to Gulf Coast catastrophe

Herbert Turner brings in latest Chowning well May 6, 2010

I think a drive down Highway 704 and through Hopewell Acres will prove that contrary to the ongoing catastrophe in the Gulf, with proper planning and a desire to do the right thing we can provide for our nation's energy needs without negatively impacting our environment. -BILLY JOE FUDGE

By Billy Joe Fudge

Chattin and Libby Chowning raised their two sons, John and Joe Chat, to reverence the land and our natural resources. This was, I am sure, an easy lesson to learn given that the classroom was beautiful Hopewell Acres on scenic Crocus Creek just over in Cumberland County down Highway 704.

I would like to apologize to the eldest son, Joe Chat for always putting his younger brother's name first but I knew John for several years prior to meeting him, plus it just sort of rolls off the tongue easier.

Over the last 150 or so years there have been three or more oil booms on Crocus Creek and each were on or near Hopewell Acres. As with any business ventures there were some good experiences and some bad experiences.
