Earliest oil well on Crocus Creek hit 174 years ago, in 1836 About: Hopewell Acres Oil Strike Amandaville KY By John Chowning The article on oil production on our farm mentions 150 years of oil production there. According to information we retrieved a few years back from a University of Kentucky official who has worked on the history of oil production in Kentucky and in the Adair-Cumberland-Clinton counties section, the earliest oil well drilled on Crocus Creek was in 1836 - just seven years after the so-called Old American Oil Well near Burkesville which was discovered in 1829. The well was clearly located on Hopewell Acres and was known as the Garnett Well. The Garnett family owned the farm at that point in time. In the mid-1860's, the Garnett Well is listed in a financial prospectus presented by the Cumberland River Oil and Salt Company to a Philadelphia bank as part of the company's assets. An accompanying map clearly shows the general location on Crocus Creek at a point that is part of our farm. The Garnett Well was reported, at the time of its initial drilling, as flowing 2,000 or so! barrels of oil - of course, they were looking for salt water at the time of the orignal discovery. When we were growing up, reference was made, by the older generation in the community, to the "old salt well" location. However, it was only in 2004 or 2005, that we discovered the above history on the Garnett Well - a couple of years or so after our late father, Chattin Chowning, had passed away. There have been periods of oil production through the years including the later 1800's, 1920's, 1960's, 1980's, and 2010. There have been similar periods of oil discovery and production throughout that general region of Kentucky. This story was posted on 2010-05-21 20:44:46
