Saturday Bird Walk: March 27, 2010

Why is the Bird Walk so early in the morning?

By Wendy Butler Burt
Adair County Bird Watchers

Since birds have extremely high metabolisms, birds are extremely active early in the morning. At first light, the birds are out foraging for food to replenish their energy supplies after working to keep warm all night (some hummingbird species actually go into a hibernation-like state at night to conserve energy). And birds also need lots of food, first thing in the morning, for all their daytime high-energy activities at this time of year - flying, singing, courting, nesting, raising young, foraging for more food, etc.

We hope you will join the Adair County Bird Watchers, first ever Saturday Bird Walk at 7amCT, at Corbin's Bottom, 3363 Corbin's Bend RD, Columbia, KY, in the Jericho community on Green River Lake, for an early morning, early Spring bird walk. We don't know what we'll see, but we'll be out there looking! Membership in the Adair County Bird Watchers (ACBW) is not required; join us if you have a genuine interest in ornithology, regardless of membership. -Wendy Butler Burt
