Vanguard holds off LWC Women in OT

Blue Raider Women finish season with 20-12 record

JACKSON, TN - Viktoria Krell put together a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds, but it was not enough to hold off No. 1-seed Vanguard (Calif.) University as the Lions held off Lindsey Wilson College 64-57 in overtime on Thursday in the first round of the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship at Oman Arena.

Bridgette Reyes and Rachel Copeland paced Vanguard with 19 and 11 points, respectively. Jaclyn Blied pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, while Copeland knocked down 3-of-10 3-pointers, as she was the only Lion to hit more than one shot from behind the arc.

RaiderView wins 11 KIPAC press awards

COLUMBIA, KY - Members of RaiderView, the Lindsey Wilson College student newspaper, recently won 11 awards in statewide competition at the annual Kentucky Intercollegiate Press Association Conference, held in Lexington, KY.

"The students work long hours to produce the newspaper, so I think the awards help to validate their efforts," said David Goguen, associate professor of journalism and RaiderView adviser. "The current staff is a dedicated core of students and one of the most selfless staffs I've ever worked with."

Cheerleading clinic March 22-25, 2010 at ACHS

There will be a cheerleading clinic held March 22-25, 2010 at the ACHS gymnasium, 526 Indian Drive Columbia, KY 42728. It is for ages 3 and up. It is from 5:30 to 7:30pmCT each night. Registration begins at 4:45pmCT on Monday, March 22, 2010.

The cost is $30.00 per child, with all proceeds going to buy pom-poms for the cheerleaders. Come out and learn from the best! ACHS Cheerleaders will be teaching sidelines, jumps, cheers, dances and stunts! Everyone attending gets a t-shirt. Parents must sign a consent form before children can participate. - Tera McQueary

Obituary: William R. Sheets, 88, Taylor Co., KY

He was retired from Chrysler Corporation. He was a Mason and of the Methodist faith. He was a native of Arkansas and will be returned there for funeral and burial.

William R. (Bill) Sheets, 88, of Campbellsville, KY, formerly of Rockford, IL, passed away in Campbellsville, KY on Monday, March 14, 2010.

Funeral service will conducted at 2 pm, Saturday March 21, 2010, in the chapel of Langford-Bookout Funeral Home, 1900 West Washington Avenue, Jonesboro, AR. Burial will follow in Jonesboro Memorial Park.

Obituary: Mrs. Pansy Jones Clark, 91, Green Co., KY

She was a native of Metcalfe Co., KY. She was a homemaker and was member of the Trammel Creek Baptist Church.

Mrs. Pansy Jones Clark of Green Co., KY, departed this life on Monday, March 15, 2010 at the T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow, KY. She was 91 years, two months and five days of age.

The funeral services for Mrs. Pansy Jones Clark will be conducted at 1pmCT, Friday, March 19, 2010 at the Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home, 206 S. Main ST, Greensburg, KY, with burial to follow in the Greasy Creek Cemetery. Bro. Carlos Compton and Bro. Lee Warf will be officiating. Visitation is requested from 4 to 9pmCT., Thursday, March 18, 2010 at the Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home and after 7amCT, Friday until time of the funeral service.

Kosair asks that blankets be new or newly made

I just talked with Kosair Children's Hospital and due to infection control - all blankets for the Baby Be Soft Blanket Campaign will need to be "new" or "newly handmade."

Fire department contains fire to kitchen area

News from the Columbia Fire Department

The Columbia Fire Dept responded at 2:55pmCT, Wednesday, March 17, 2010, to a mobile home fire at 726 1/2 Mack ST, Columbia, KY to a residence occupied by Mary Harris.

The fire was contained to the kitchen area and the occupant was helped outside by Chasity Marcum. There was minimal damage and there were 21 firemen on the scene for around 30 minutes.

Snow is a 1990 graduate of Campbellsville College with a bachelor of music degree in education. She is a 1985 graduate of Campbellsville High School.

Snow is the daughter of Al Hardy, dean of academic support at Campbellsville University, and his wife, Peggy, a local piano instructor.

Adair County VI was treated to a tour of Majestic Yachts by owner and entrepreneur Jim Hadley who is also the proprietor of Daniel's Mexican Grill opening soon by the Fountain on the Square, in Downtown Columbia, KY.The group's focus this month was on business and entrepreneurship. From Jim Hadley they learned many interesting facts and were encouraged by his positiveness and perserverance as an entrepreneur in these troubled economic times.

Bonner leaders distribute grants to local organizations

The Lindsey Wilson College Bonner Leader Program distributed Community Fund grants to four area non-profit organizations. The grants totaled $2,000. The grants were administered on behalf of the Corella & Bertram F. Bonner Foundation of Princeton, N.J.

Three of the grants were given to Adair County organizations, Agape House, Camp Casey and Mountain View Rescue, and the other was given to the Center for Courageous Kids of Allen County, KY.

The four groups were selected based on involvement by Lindsey Wilson Bonner leaders.

Ethan Quehl to represent USA in Pan Am championships

Really talented downhill rider has bright future on LWC Cycling Team, Coach Dave Grigsby says

COLUMBIA, KY - Lindsey Wilson College cyclist Ethan Quehl has been selected as one of 21 riders to represent the United States at next month's Pan American Continental Mountain Bike Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala, April 9-11, 2010.

Quehl signed with Lindsey Wilson this winter and will be a prominent member of the Blue Raiders mountain bike squad this coming fall.

ACHS Baseball Field Renovation Celebration is March 20, 2010

Presentations of Certificates of Appreciation will be made 11:00am on Saturday. Adair County High will meet Glasgow High at noon at the ACHS Baseball Field, 336 Gen. John Adair DR, Columbias, KY.

I am the proud parent of Derek Brockman, #3 of the ACHS baseball team.

Volunteers, including players, coaches, parents and members of the public have worked extremely hard the past few months on renovating our field and would love to share it with everyone.

We are having a "Renovation Celebration" on Saturday, March 20, 2010, at the baseball field on Indian Drive. We will be recognizing several members of the public for their donation of time and/or money to our projects.

Stray red and white basset mix puppy found on KY 551

I was traveling home on KY 551 today (March 17) and found a stray red and white bassett mix puppy abandoned. He was almost hit by the car in front of me so I brought him home with me.
