Historian Mike Watson:
Gentrys Mill, KY named for 1st postmaster

About: Gentrys Mill must have been important place

By Michael Watson, Author of An Adair County History

In the days when walking or horse power were the only modes of transportation, rural areas had communities, some with post offices, that lay only a few miles apart. Nearly every three or four miles one would find at least one store, sometimes accompanied by the post office, a mill, blacksmith, and in some cases, a doctor.

Gentry's Mill had a post office for a half-century. While researching An Adair County, Kentucky History, volume 1, the following facts were found:
GENTRY'S MILL post office was named for Christopher C. Gentry, the first postmaster, who operated his mill nearby. He was appointed post master on 22 January 1890. Other postmasters were: Valina Sullivan appointed 17 March 1902, C.C. Gentry appointed 8 February 1906, George E. Burton appointed 14 April 1908, and Rissie Burton appointed 28 June 1924. Gentry's Mill was discontinued as of 30 September 1940 with mail sent to Russell Springs. At one time Daniel P. Gentry had a blacksmith shop at Gentry's Mill.

Night Photography 101:
Planning a shooting schedule; on location

This is Night Photography 101: 3rd Installment: Planning A Shooting Schedule And On Location . .
Next earlier lesson: Night Photography 101 . 2nd Installment: Night Photography 101 . . . If It's In Your Bag . . . Know What It Is

By John E. Moss
Jamestown, KY

It is hard to think of everything and plan accordingly. This has been proven to me with the utmost clarity many, many times over many, many years. I recently did an early morning shoot on US 127 at the outer reaches of Jamestown's city limits. Due to the nature of the location, I would be shooting across the highway at a small church that had an unusual background. It could be a good shot and in the early morning darkness everything seemed to be going as I had planned. And I was confident I had carefully planned.

Kentucky Color: Water Maple

Water Maple is one of the earliest blooming trees and what about that color?
For next earlier Kentucky Color, see Kentucky Color: Mistletoe on Black Cherry

By Billy Joe Fudge
Retired District Forester, Kentucky Division of Forestry

It is certainly the earliest blooming Maple. You probably see Water Maple flowers often during warm days in late winter but from a distance they only give a reddish pink hue to the tree's leafless crown.
