Students learn about life at Adair Co. Middle School Reality Fair Click on headline for full story, student quotes, and photos By Sommer Brown 8th grade students at Adair Co. Middle School got a taste of reality this week. In a collaborative effort, members of the school, County 4-H Extension Agent Tony Rose, and several of our community business leaders presented the 2010 ACMS Reality Fair. As a part of the experience students participated in mock job interviews, balanced a monthly budget based on occupations they chose, and visited 17 different "reality" booths. At some reality booths students selected items such as clothing, cars, and houses. At other booths they had to pay their utility bills, taxes, and child care. They even had to visit a "chance" booth where, based on the luck of the draw, students spent money on things like birthday presents and broken windows. Students had a lot to say about what they learned: "Actual life is a lot harder than it looks, I don't see how Mom and Dad do it." -David Burton "Life, when we grow up, is going to be outrageous!" -Zach Estes "Life is expensive!" -Michiah Baxter "Don't buy everything 1st class-you go broke faster!" -Brian Bramley "Life isn't all it seems to be when you get older. I'm glad I'm still somewhat of a child, and I appreciate my parents much more." -Sarah Patton "Life is tough without an education." -Jason Trasher "Look at your parents, they go through a lot. Whenever you get their age you have to make the same decisions." -Jesse Sanchez "You don't know what your parents go through until you experience it yourself." -Ciari Gabehart "Stay in school, it helps in the long run!" -Dylan Godsey "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are gonna get!" -Tyler Corbin "Learn now, know later." -Ashley Simpson A special thank you goes out to all that made the event possible: Mary Knight and the Adair County Homemakers, Lindsey Wilson College, Adair County 4-H Leadership Students, Family Resource Center, and several local businesses.
