Historian Mike Watson: Gentrys Mill, KY named for 1st postmaster About: Gentrys Mill must have been important place By Michael Watson, Author of An Adair County History In the days when walking or horse power were the only modes of transportation, rural areas had communities, some with post offices, that lay only a few miles apart. Nearly every three or four miles one would find at least one store, sometimes accompanied by the post office, a mill, blacksmith, and in some cases, a doctor. Gentry's Mill had a post office for a half-century. While researching An Adair County, Kentucky History, volume 1, the following facts were found: GENTRY'S MILL post office was named for Christopher C. Gentry, the first postmaster, who operated his mill nearby. He was appointed post master on 22 January 1890. Other postmasters were: Valina Sullivan appointed 17 March 1902, C.C. Gentry appointed 8 February 1906, George E. Burton appointed 14 April 1908, and Rissie Burton appointed 28 June 1924. Gentry's Mill was discontinued as of 30 September 1940 with mail sent to Russell Springs. At one time Daniel P. Gentry had a blacksmith shop at Gentry's Mill. For more by Michael Watson, enter his name in the searchbox. For more on Gentrys Mill, enter that name in the searchbox.
