Clarification received on Clarification on A-team start in 1986

Christopher Rowe finally sets record straight

About: Clarification on A-Team start in 1986

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

A clarification on Brother Fred's clarification.

I wasn't looking out the window, I was looking at Henrietta Scott, who was trying to use mime gestures to coach me through fixing my tie.

Do they still wear ties in quick recall competitions?
s/Christopher RowePS: If Freddy gets to be Fred how come I don't get to be Christopher? Nobody without a 384 exchange number has called me Chris in over twenty years!

Road Department has done a great job

About: Thanks to Adair Co., State of KY Road Departments

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Our Road Department has done a great job all winter. I called to thank them during one of our many snow falls this season. It is always to easy to be critical so I wanted them to know how much I appreciated their efforts. We live 7 miles from town and work in other counties. It's important that we can get to work.

Again, thank you!

Jim sends links to two other Cane Valley articles

By "Jim"

There is a great article about Cane Valley, 1908, penned by "founder" Patrick Henry (P.H.) Bridgewater (1834-1912), appears in Cane Valley, Then and Now in Kentucky Kinfolks, taken from the Adair County News of May 13, 1908.The quote by Miss Blevins is priceless!

The article lists the businesses in Cane Valley in that year. And seven Cane Valley advertisers were found in the pages of that Adair County News issue.

Another Cane Valley article, this one written in early 1918, appeared on CM some years ago: Cyrus/Cane Valley, 1918, with ''On the Road'', tells of a warm visit by the writer of travelogues in those days, when he visited Cane Valley, KY, "on a cold, disagreeable day."

Economic Gardening can work in Columbia-Adair Co., KY

Chairman of Economic Development Authority promotes plan to incubate businesses in Columbia and Adair Co., KY. Programs in Liberty, London, and Scottsville, KY are already underway, with overall great success. Adair County has trained, certified entrepreneurial coaches, a special entrepreneurial section at Adair Public Library, a unique resource in Lindsey Wilson College, backing of CJE and Mayor, and an Economic Development Authority and Chamber of Commerce set to be the driving force behind this grassroots, bootstrap plan to invigorate the local economy.

By Doug McCammish
Chairman, Columbia-Adair Co. Economic Development Authority

In these difficult economic times when everyone is looking for jobs either for themselves or others, there are several interesting things going on, although not necessarily in Washington. Several states and communities are pursuing a strategy called "Economic Gardening" in which the objective is to support new and growing small businesses, rather than spend tax dollars trying to attract large factories. Others are recognizing that, contrary to what you might think, tough economic times seem to foster new product and service ideas . It is sort of a "given lemons, make lemonade" theme.

Farmers Bank stories bring memory of another great horse ride

Rollin Farris made 9.5 mile trip from Cane Valley to Columbia, KY at age 4
Written in response to reading: Remembers riding to Cane Valley on horseback for groceries

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Ed, Jim's articles about the Cane Valley bank were most interesting! I noted the article about Ms Clara Smith Rodgers riding to Cane Valley on horseback to shop. This brought to mind a piece written by Lorena F. Jackson (a Farris family historian) that describes a horseback ride by Lavelle Farris Shepherd's father, Rollin Farris at four years of age.

Thanks,

s/Morris Shepherd

As always, thanks, Mr. Shepherd, for the reminder of this delightful story by the late Lorena Farris Jackson, (1918-2004). We hope you'll share more of them with our readers. She left a great treasure of stories. A search on "Lorena Farris" on CM yields a number of her wonderful stories, most of them centered around early days in Cane Valley.

Old Farmers Bank building in Cane Valley had basketball goal

It was a great place for games while waiting for the bus

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Seeing pictures of the old Cane Valley Bank brings back memories. In the early 60s there was a basketball goal at the back of the bank. We had some free time waiting on our bus, so there were some fierce basketball games back there.

I have a lot of good memories of Cane Valley.
