KY Color Road Report: Muldraugh Hill, Marion Co. is spectacular

Billy Joe Fudge sent this road report on Kentucky Color while on the road to the Rebel Classic Marching Band Festival in Florence, KY, today:

Muldraugh Hill is spectacular today. I've been to the Smoky Mountains and I've seen the Green Mountains of Vermont. Neither is a match for Muldraugh Hill today. On the West side (of KY 55) the hill is solid yellow, with mostly poplar.

On the East Side it's a splash of variegated reds and oranges and purples and some deep green evergreens. It's a visual feast, and a picture some landscape photographer ought to get. It's worth a trip to see today.

The location is just north of the Taylor County line in Marion County. It's maybe six miles north of Campbellsville, so I'd put it at only 25 miles or so from the Square in Columbia.

This is always one of Kentucky's most beautiful scenes, with the knobs and valleys, in any season. But Libby and I think this may the very prettiest it ever gets. We would love to see some imaginative photographers capture the vistas for all to see.

Of course, at this time of autumn, the north is ahead of us in fall color, and higher areas have leaf turns before lower ones.

Swine flu: There are health drawbacks to interacting less

About: Swine Flu Handshakes are out. Curmudgeonry is in?

While this all sounds like a good idea, in the long run it has drawbacks. The less he interact, the more we are not commonly immunized. After a while we will have young people who have no resistance to all the ordinary viruses as well as none to the extraordinary ones.

It's easy to only see one side of a really big picture in the sense of a long timeframe.

Old Coddger: 1st hand hearsay about more dragstrips

Kellyville strip had best spectator viewing area
About: Some illegal drag racing at the bridge in Neatsville

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I've been told, about these Adair Co "drag strips." I really don't know how reliable my information might be. Remember Ned Bow, I'm just going on hearsay.

There four more I've heard tell of:
  • Neatsville Bridge Strip, mentioned by Larry
  • Pelham Branch, just north of the old bridge across Russell Creek/li>
  • Kellyville Road, starting line at Biggs Road; and Holmes Bend Road, with its start near Billy Murrell farm and finish at Van Hoy Lane
Kellyville had the best spectator viewing from the top of the bank of the cut for the road near the starting line. I hear that at time there would 15 -20 spectators on this bank.

Ya'll take all this with a grain of salt. You know how our memories get with age.

Swine Flu: Handshakes are out; curmudgeonry is in?

Hobart Keltner seems to have had it right

By Ed Waggener

With the latest H1N1 death total in Kentucky standing at 10, one area of social interaction is getting a lot of attention: The Handshake.

It's one tradition which needs to go. It spreads disease. While touchy-feelies of the world see this as a doomsday setback, for many of us, it was about time, swine flu or no swine flu.

French Horn Duo gave spectacular performance

About: Virtuoso Horn Duo at Slider, Friday, Oct. 23 2009

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

WOW! This was indeed a spectacular performance. From our perspective, it was probably the best of the LWC Slider performances we have attended. We truly enjoyed the whole evening. The ending piece, "Take the A Train" by Strayhorn, was the icing on the cake, but all of it was great.
