2009-09-25 - 7289 Hwy 55 S. RD, Columbia, KY in the Village of Glens Fork - Photo by Ken Hill.
"Contrary to what a few people may have read in an erroneous media report, here is a photograph of the score on our latest Health Inspection by Corey Patterson of the Lake Cumberland Area Health Department on September 14, 2009, which lists three very minor problems and gave us a score of 97 out of 100% in our restaurant area.!," Ken Hill of Hardscratch General Store said this afternoon in a telephone interview. "We're frying fish tonight! And we're serving them in as clean a restaurant as you'll find anywhere." He added, "Our friends and customers know how hard we work to keep this little place alive, and to keep our community alive. We work just as hard to keep the place clean. We have NEVER received poor marks on any Health Inspection, and have worked hard to make sure our entire store is as presentable as possible. We appreciate all the community support we've received and ask everyone in Adair and Russell County to come out tonight and see for themselves the kind of place we, Ken, Vickie and Jake are running here and enjoy the wonderful catfish we have serve on catfish night every 2nd and last Friday of each month."

News of Sept. 30, 1908 related to news of Sept. 30, 2009

An important birth is listed among the items on the front page of the Adair County News 101 years and 5 days ago. Columbia had a baseballed which played the Louisville Colonels here. There was an itemabout a stabbing. And the lights were out for some days all over town while the 'dynamore' was repaired in Louisville." In real estate news, a 200 acre farm sold for $4,250. A man convicted of stealing two hams was given a sentence of two year in the pen

By 1908, the Adair County News carried local news on the front page, not boilerplate and advertisements. The front page selections included wedding and birth announcements (the former always considerably longer than the latter), obituaries, society tidbits, items of general interest, and even sports and classified ads.

Wal-Mart is helping teachers at Adair County Elementary School purchase much-needed classroom supplies through its new Teacher Reward program. Ten teachers were randomly selected during a school assembly program on September 25, 2009, and Walmart representatives, Manager Danny Bragg, Carmella Mings, and Vickie Petty presented each of them with a one-hundred dollar gift card to use for classroom supplies.

There was much excitement in the air as the names were called and the entire faculty, staff and student body at Adair Elementary would like to thank Wal-Mart for this wonderful gift that will directly benefit our students.

The recipient teachers were Pat Coomer, Lisa Godsey, Tonya Feese, Valerie Taylor, Jamie Maurath, Amy Walker, Alice Curry, Pam Cundiff, Ryan McQueary, and Dee Watson. Billy Bloyd accepted the certificate on behalf of Dee Watson.

The new Teachers Rewards program is an extension of the retailer's ongoing support of education and local community involvement. On average, teachers spend more than $500 a year out of their own pockets for classroom supplies, according to the American Federation of Teachers. Focusing on schools with the highest need, each Walmart store and Sam's Club location across the nation will select one local kindergarten through eighth grade school to participate in the Teacher Reward program.
