Epicurean Kentuckian: Spring Lamb with mint

"Lamb grown on Wendell Berry's Henry County farm, available at Smith-Berry Winery in Newcastle, KY, paired wonderfully with fresh mint from the back yard," Pen writes. Kentucky Spring Lamb was once a specialty known all over the Eastern United States, and was as well respected as Penn's Country Hams are today. The animals once were a major secondary income for Bluegrass tobacco farmers, who could use curing barns for sheep between burley seasons. Wendell Berry is well-known to South Central Kentucky. He delivered a major anti-war speech at Lindsey Wilson College for its May 4, 2005 Commencement, "Author Wendell Berry challenges LWC Class of 2005 to help end human violence."

    The Glensfork Flood of 2009

Mark Hale documents the flooding with cell phone pictures
Click on headline for story plus photos by Mark Hale

The heavy rains which produced the flooding in Gradyville on May 8, 2009, also flooded downtown Glensfork, KY.

Mark Hale reports, "Some of the locals said Hardscratch had had over 7 inches of rain for that week."

He continued, "I don't know how much fell on Friday, but was a lot in a short period of time.

He took some pictures, with his cell phone camera, while standing on the porch of the Hardscratch Store in Glensfork. The photos show water over KY 55, the Main Street through the town. Even so, he noted, "The water was about about six inches higher before the photos were made."
