Events begin with a 'Start Your Engines' party at Grider Hill Marina near Jamestown on Thursday night, May 14, 2009, with the first full day of events beginning Friday, May 15 at 10:00amCT when Race Village opens to the public. Race Village is located at Halcomb's Landing adjacent to Wolf Creek Dam.

The actual racing features speeds of nearly 200 mph, boats flying through the air in choppy water and helicopters soaring overhead carrying camera crews and rescue teams on a six-mile course featuring seven turns. And there will also be other action on the shore during the weekend event.

"We are very excited about our opening ceremony scheduled for Friday evening," event organizer Hilda Legg said.

Events at the ceremony include a blessing of the fleet, a chance to meet the drivers, and the first-ever Little Miss and Miss Lake Cumberland Grand Prix scholarship pageants. "This is another great example of how members of the community and various organizations are coming together in partnership to make the Grand Prix a success," Legg said, "because we will begin our pageant at the new Russell County Natatorium and then finalists will move to Race Village, where Miss Lake Cumberland Grand Prix will be crowned."

Participants for Little Miss are ages 3 to 5, while contestants for Miss Lake Cumberland Grand Prix are 18 to 22. For more information on the pageant, please contact Lisa Gosser at 270-585-1982 or Melody Haynes at (270) 858-9715.

"There will be something for the whole family at the Grand Prix," Hilda Legg said., "and for very reasonable prices." Legg pointed out that One of the best ways to watch is for fans to bring their boats and watch from the water. "While that doesn't cost you anything," says Legg, "we don't want spectators to miss the personal experience they'll find in Race Village." There will be water taxis available to take boaters to and from Race Village and for those who want to watch from the shore, parking with shuttle service will be available at the Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, just across from Halcomb's Landing.
