Blackbird Harrison

2008-10-19 - Roley Cemetery, Casey Creek, KY - Photo by Bob Chelf.
BLACKBIRD HARRISON--pay no attention to the name "John" on the brass buckle--can whittle a shaving as thin as any with as tight a curl as any man who ever put a Case knife to cedar. But his fame and name derive from his reputation as the best mechanic ever to set foot in Edith, KY or on Blue Branch Road. "I don't work on cars much any more, but I fixed a many a one," he says. He was the favorite local mechanic of the late Henry Giles. But it was another Giles, the legendary Walter, who doused a head fire and gave him his name. "I was working on a car with the motor running," Mr. Harrison said, "and the carburetor backfired on me and set my hair on fire. Walter was there, and he put the fire out with his oily gloves. Then he looked at me and said, 'You look like a blackbird.' I went in the house to wash my face, and sure enough," he said, "I looked like a blackbird." The name, he said, stuck. And more people know him by the sobriquet than by his given name, "John." John Harrison was at the Roley Cemetery, Sunday afternoon, October 19, 2008, with relatives Joyce Pogue and Imogene Roberts looking for Harrison ancestors. Joyce Pogue was also wanting more information about an establishment north of Knifley, KY, known as "The Voting Precinct." If anyone recalls the scope of that the social gathering place, please send to ColumbiaMagazine.com using one of the Contact/Submit buttons. A Today Feature picture

By Ed Waggener

The 2008 Fall PRIDE Cleanup held Saturday, October 18, 2008, was an overwhelming success.

Figures are not yet in, but it appears that records were set, with we understand, well over 200 people participating in the Fall 2008 PRIDE Adair County Clean-up. That would be a record. Lists, including lots of names, numbers of miles of roads cleaned, prize winners, and more is expected tomorrow from the office of CJE Ann Melton. CM when publish those numbers when they are receved.

It was a glorious fall day. The turnout included people from two years old to octogenarians. It was a joint effort by both Adair Fiscal Court and the City of Columbia.

Tom Chaney No. 180. Oct. 19, 2008: Tommy Womack novel

Of Writers and Their Books. No. 180 The Lavender Boys & Elsie by Tommy Womack. Last week's column: Of Citizens and Their Theatre, essay on Kentucky Repertoire Theatre in Horse Cave, KY

By Tom Chaney

Don't Ask, Don't Tell about Fried Green Tomatoes with Sausage

This tale comes straight from a real Civil War authority, an authentic author, and a great musician. As I read Tommy Womack's fine book The Lavender Boys and Elsie [2008] I called to mind my father's response to questions about the truthfulness of some of his stories. "Well," he was wont to reply, "If it ain't true it ought to be!"

Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Lessons from those Burma Shave signs

ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor

WISDOM FROM THE ROADSIDE
This essay first printed in The Hart County News-Herald, January 8, 2006. First posted, CM, This story was posted on 2007-05-20 at 11:22:21
Back in the late 1980's Robert Fulghum became a celebrity with the publication of All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. That book was a collection of essays about wisdom found in everyday places. I remember liking that book a lot, and the idea of finding great truths in common circumstances has always appealed to me. A recent article about the anniversary of the publication of Fulghum's book reminded me of another source of wisdom.
