THEATRE: Cash On Delivery Delivers Laughter

A review by Robert Stone

Cash On Delivery by Michael Cooney opened at Kentucky Repertory Theatre in Horse Cave Friday night two weeks ago. It is a farce which means lots of doors, mistaken identities, unlikely arrivals, and spur of the moment explanations which require further unlikely explanations.

Dylan Myers is Eric Swan who has been having an affair with government services and keeping it a secret from his wife. It started innocently enough. An unemployment check for a boarder who had moved away arrived and Eric was without money. Assuming a new identity and cashing the check was no trouble. It was only to be that one time but the next month Eric still had no job.

I checked and doublechecked just to make sure. I took off for Campbellsville with my son Wichita, to pick up my lovely wife Sheila. She was at work.

Tom Chaney No. 176. Sept. 21, 2008: Errors and Omissions

Of writers and their books. Book review by Tom Chaney of Errors and Omissions by Paul Goldstein. Last week's column: Southern Country Cooking from The Loveless Cafe by Jane and Michael Stern

By Tom Chaney
bookstore@scrtc.com

'Evil, Ego, and High Principle

I have trouble writing about a mystery/suspense novel that I am eager for other folks to try. I want to tell enough about it to peak the interest of a reader, but I don't want to give too much away.

A couple of years back I wrote about a suspense novel written by a friend. I thought I had steered a clean course between telling enough to intrigue and not enough to spoil the surprise ending. She took me mildly to task for revealing it all.

In the case of Paul Goldstein's Errors and Omissions [Anchor Books, 2006] it should not be a problem revealing my pleasure in the story yet leaving enough unsaid.

But now the first pleasure came in how I got the book. A friend from Campbellsville asked whether I knew about Errors and Omissions. When I confessed my ignorance, he vowed to deliver it to my door the following morning. And he did.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh from Sept. 24, 2006: Autumn, transitions

ANOTHER ANGLE: The occasional musings of a Kentucky Pastor. This article is a reprint, appropriate to the season.
The Rev. Joey N. Welshjoey_n_welsh@hotmail.com

AUTUMN: ENDINGS, BEGINNINGS AND TRANSITIONS
The coming of autumn reminds us again of the transitional quality of existence. No season, no status, no condition is forever. Whether we talk about the calendar or the weather or our own lives, some things are always coming to an end while other things are being born or renewed. In our part of the northern hemisphere fall is the time when the growing season comes to an end and the world seems to die away as winter approaches.
