A familiar Adair Co. scene: Do you know vantage point?

2008-07-20 - Columbia, KY - Photo By Pen.
Most Adair Countians probably drive past this scene at least once a week. Do you know the vantage point? It's fooled a lot of people. A clue is that the photo was taken at around 6:45pmCT. ANSWER. A Monday, July 21, 2008, Today's Picture Album photo.

Answer to Do you know vantage point? photo

The picture of the Adair County Courthouse steeple in the photo was taken from the grassy curb along Hurt Street by the Columbia IGA (former Houchens) parking lot. The large brick building on the left is the Stephens Car Wash. The photo was taken with an extreme telephoto lens. The sunlight on the left face of the steeple would indicate that that is toward Burkesville Street. Most who look at the photo initially think it is taken from within a block of the Public Square. We'll add more identification on the layers of hills when we get help on that.

Letter: Glad to see that Adair Countians are doing well

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I am so happy to see that the residents here are doing so well in these economic times. I drive from Columbia to Campbellsville to go to work. I drive the posted speed limit of 55 mph. Every time, I get passed by just about every car.

Big gas guzzling SUVs whiz by me, sometimes I even get the 1 finger salute, which is surprising in this Bible toting community that we live in. I have witnessed several acccidents on Hwy 55 in the last several months because people are in too much of a hurry to get somewhere.

In December 1864 -- in the midst of war -- in the wake of General Sherman, Eliza Frances Andrews, 24, and her younger sister Metta set out from Washington, in Northwest Georgia, to travel southwest to visit their older sister Mrs. Troup Butler who was living with her two children on a plantation near Albany.

Fannie kept a journal on the trip and into the following year. Many years later she picked up the journal again adding notes, explanations and an introduction before its publication in 1908 as The War-Time Journal of a Georgia Girl [D. Appleton, 1908].
