Yard Sales: Today, Saturday, July 5, 2008 another big day

Despite the rain, the gas prices, and the economy, Adair Countians are having a great Fourth of July weekend. Many have used the restrictions to their advantage, seeing things close at home, shopping for bargains, and finding yard sales as much fun for getting to know neighbors as they are for buying bargains.

ColumbiaMagazine.com's free Yard Sale classifieds seem to be helping, we're happy to hear. Here's a letter we received a few hours ago:
    Mr. Waggener,

Thank you. I am sure we would not have done so well without all of your advertising!!

Thank you for stopping by today. I wish you could have made it yesterday. We were busy all day long yesterday (Thursday, July 3, 2008), but with the rain today things were a little bit slower. However, we still maintained a steady flow of customers.

Picnic at the Giles House during hummingbird, mimosa season

    JANICE HOLT & HENRY GILES

Enjoy a short daytrip in mimosa/hummingbird season on less than 4 gallons of gas away for more than 70,000 people in this area. The Giles House is open weekends through September 2008.

Susan Lewis, resident at the Becky House beside the Janice and Henry Giles home at Spout Springs, sends an invitation to enjoy a picnic at Spout Springs.

Along with the invitation, she sent a photo of a tiny hummingbird enjoying its own picnic in a mimosa tree over the pond at Giles farm. The mimosa tree is now in full bloom, at the Knifley attraction, as are so many mimosas in Adair County at this time.

Immigrant Spirit: A story for Independence Day

Nancy Goff, former Metcalfe County stylist, song writer, entertainer and story teller, is best known for her down-home stories, including her delightful book, "The Adventures of Slump Thacker." The story below, one befitting the most important patriotic holiday of the year, is an example of her wonderful prose. -CM.

    By Nancy Goff
"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."
These are the words etched upon the Statue of Liberty. The noble lady,a symbol of liberty and freedom from oppression, has held her lamphigh on the shores of Ellis Island since October 28, 1886. PresidentGrover Cleveland graciously accepted the statue, given to the UnitedStates of America by France. In his acceptance speech he was quoted assaying, "We will not forget that liberty has here made her home."
