Knew the Devil quite well; they were kin Joe Russell Barbee tells about the time a local Columbia man met the Devil in the Columbia Cemetery and it was no surprise. The fellow was well known for his drinking escapades, brought on, some thought, by an unhappy marriage. One of his MOs was to get drunk, go to the Columbia Cemetery and sleep it off. Some of his friends followed him there one night. They hid behind some tombstones and waited until the drunk dozed off. Then one of them yelled, "Do you know who this is?" the voice called out, then answered it's own question. "This is the Devil, Bill.". The Devil held no awe for the drunk. "I know you real well," he answered the Devil, "I'm married to your sister, Emma." 2008-06-29 13:39:28 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local History
