Adair County Wildlife: Fishing spider

2008-06-29 - The Holler, Old Clearsprings Road, Adair County, KY - Photo By Shamarie Claiborne.
Nature photographer Shamarie Claiborne wrote that, after spotting a praying mantis, which reminded her of God, she looked on the wall and saw the spider, above. She doesn't say whether she was implying the stark contrast of the spider's scary appearance as giving the opposite impression and this creature reminded her of the Devil, or whether she was referring to the Fishing Spider's ability to emulate Jesus by walking on water. Fishing spiders can do that, and can swim like Mark Spitzer. They seem to be quite nice spiders, and do, according to indications from the University of Kentucky, take care of a lot of bad bugs in the Holler by dining on them. More accurate entomology welcome. Clicking Read More accesses the "Today, Sunday, June 29, 2008," feature, where the Today's Picture Album includes Shamarie Claiborne's photo of a Praying Mantis with its little paws in a praying position.

Columbia Western Bypass: The View from the Bridge

2008-06-29 - On the bridge between Columbia Western Bypass between KY 61 S and KY 55 South - Photo By Ed Waggener.
A NEW MARKING PLACE for travelers will be this view from the bridge on the Columbia Western Bypass between KY 61 South and KY 55 South. In the top left, the shorter tower is at Kentucky State Police Post 15; the taller one is the cell phone tower behind the Jamestown Street Wal-Mart store. At the top of the Exit 49 ramp, top left, travellers are already seeing the start of new skyline icons. The huge Shepherd Water Tower is clearly visible from there for traffic stopping before turning onto Jamestown Street, as is the view of the new Lindsey Wilson College Athletic Center, now under construction. Beshear Administration Contact R.L. Walker says that he has assurances from the Kentucky Department of Highways that brush on the Louie B. Nunn/Cumberland Parkway will be cleared away to make the Lindsey Stadium clearly visible for all Parkway traffic. Walker says that the KTC also plans to build a retaining wall along the parkway. Early mornings along the stretch from the overpass bridge to Exit 47 at Holladay Place have had spectacular shows of blue cornflower in the median. Another real railroad was in Edmonton, once, almost

2008-06-29 - Downtown Edmonton, KY - Photo By Linda Waggener.
When the Great Silver Eagle took joyriders through the streets of Edmonton, during the Blueberry Festival, it was the community's first brush with railroading. There was a time when a railroad was proposed to connect Edmonton with Glasgow. According to local anecdotes, a promoter raising funds for the railroad would alternate the name of the proposed rail line from Hamilton Rail Line to Kinnaird Rail Line, depending on which Edmonton bank president had put the most capital into the venture. The railroad was unique, locals said, because some the line was started, lore has it, not from the existing line in Glasgow as is usually done, but from a point on the creek behind the Pitts Barbecue on W. Stockton Street (Glasgow Road) west toward Barren County. The line, like the one proposed to Campbellsville from Columbia, was never built, is sadly missed today when rail offers far cheaper transport than gas guzzling automobiles. In Columbia, we had a Depot on Reed Street, but the line was never built, according to James F. "Smoky" Harper, who knows about these things.
