LWC Professor works with teen anti-drug group in Russell Co.

By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Affairs

A Lindsey Wilson College professor is working with a group of Russell County students to help fight drug use in their schools. Associate Professor Sociology and Criminal Justice Daniel Phillips III met with the teen council member of Russell County Partners in Drug Prevention this week during their three-day retreat at Lure Lodge

Six of the teens are students at Russell County High School and the other student is at Russell County Middle School. The teens, led by Lindsey Wilson graduate Donita Lawless of Russell County Partners in Drug Prevention, created a marketing strategy for the 2008-09 school year to recruit more Russell County teen-agers into the anti-drug program.

The students also received advice from Hasan Davis of Berea, KY, a youth advocate and motivational speaker.

Letter: Reader disturbed by graffitti on playground equipment

LETTERS & FEEDBACK

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

This evening my husband and I took our two little girls to the Road Side Park to enjoy the new playground, and eat supper. When we arrived I was very disappointed to see that someone had taken spray paint and wrote all over this new equipment. I am sure it was some young child with nothing better to do, but this is very disturbing. I pay taxes for things like this, and would like to be able to enjoy it without my kids asking what H...E...L...* spells. To whoever did this I hope someday you grow up! One day you will have children of your own and maybe you will understand. If you want to be an artist I say take a art class.

Sincerely,
Brandy Thompson

For Beverly Merritt, every Fathers Day triggers painful memories

Anguish at memory of Father's pain on hearing of death of her younger sister, Marietta, in an accident which should never have happened, comes back each Father's Day

An open letter to drunk drivers:

Well, thankfully, another Father's Day has come and gone. For many families, maybe even yours, it was a happy day filled with traditional church services, family get-togethers, picnics, or perhaps a day at nearby Green River Lake, boating, water skiing and knocking down a few?
