High winds down limbs, mostly water maples, around town

Mess left to clean up on Monday; some structures suffer damage. Clean up problems raise the need to look at urban forest (a Billy Joe Fudge suggestion), abundance of brittle trees, and attendant problems with them
With photos
By Ed Waggener

High winds during the night left debris and some down trees and limbs around Columbia when folks awakened Sunday morning, May 11, 2008.

A scan of city streets found trees and limbs down in many neighborhoods and streets, including Reed Street, Tutt, Hudson, and Burkesville Streets.

Expatriate reports in from between Omaha & Atlanta

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I get "home" to Columbia two or three times per year: pretty much all of my Dad's family is still there. My aunt, Sue Bailey, posts on your site sometimes, too.

As I write this, I'm aboard a plane headed home to Atlanta, GA, from Omaha, Nebraska. I work for a federal agency called GAO (Government Accountability Office) so I travel around trying to find out what you're getting for your tax dollar. It's an interesting job that has taken me to the far corners of the earth and into the inner offices of the Capitol and secret rooms in the Pentagon!

Atticking, Attaching, Attocking

Spring is fast gearing up toward summer. 'Fore long we'll be looking for summer-time things to do to avoid doing the summer-time things other folks think we must do.

I favor reading as a proper summer exercise this year and most years.

Especially, this year as the price of a gallon of gasoline bobs up towards the cost of a gallon of whiskey.

2008 Spring event caps off largest LWC graduating class

Huge day in Columbia with over 2,000 friends and family at Biggers

By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Affairs
