Writer who lives at Giles House sees why they chose site

By Susan J. Lewis

The Janice and Henry Giles log cabin is a great subject for photos of the seasons in Adair County.

The Giles Society is in the process of preserving this piece of history for future generations. As a current board member of the Giles Society Ive been given the privilege of living in the Becky House on the Giles property as the caretaker and gardener in residence.

I know part of why Janice and Henry may have wanted to live in this valley the beautiful sunsets, the fog lifting off the pond in the mornings, the ice forming on the pond in the winter, the wildlife coming to drink in the pond and at the springs, the peaceful quiet nights with only the frogs croaking to break up the silence, the fresh clean smell of the morning, and even the steady winds that creak the house and sway the trees.

The time George W. Bush didn't come to Adair County, KY

Some Adair Countians were sure the man they saw or shook hands with was the future President, but the man they remember coming in the back door of Murrell Burton's, leaving by the front, and boarding the bus for London was another of the future president's sons, Kay Burton's photo shows, and that's an historic event. And there's a bit of icing for the cake, she says. Marilyn Quayle was here, to boot.

By Ed Waggener

The usually infallible George Keltner was only almost right about an important visit to Columbia, KY. And his memory was in good company. Bruce Rogers remembered it the same as Mr. Keltner, and so did Joe Hare, though Joe Hare had later misgivings.

"George W. Bush came through Columbia in 1988," Bruce Rogers told us a few months ago. "I drove around the Square and saw him shaking hands with some Adair Countians before he got on a tour bus."

One Man's Lincoln production, Greensburg, KY Feb. 15, 16, 2008

EVENTS

By Judy Weatherhold

In honor of the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth 200 years old, Kentucky will begin its celebration February 11 and 12, 2008, in Louisville and Hodgenville, respectively.

Greensburg will join the celebration with the Kentucky Repertory Theatre's# production of "One Man's Lincoln" Play.

This one-man touring production about Abraham Lincoln is from the viewpoint of his law partner, William Herndon, Springfield, Illinois. (Note: Billy Herndon was born in Greensburg.) Billy Herndon presents a spellbinding monologue of the "evidence" on Lincoln as if he were in court, speaking from the law offices the two men shared before Lincoln was elected president. Outspoken and controversial, he attempts to decipher Lincoln's greatness and complexity, while offering a compelling look at his humanity.

Letter: Todd Spring reminds writer of beauty of Todd's Cave

LETTERS & FEEDBACK

ColumbiaMagazine.com

Upon reading this and seeing the image I was reminded of the many treks that I have made into the nearby Todd's Cave, as many others, no doubt, have also done.

If I'm not mistaken, Joe Allen Moore has mapped the cave extensively and at one time the maps were on the walls of the old Hardee's Restaurant in Columbia. It's a very beautiful cave to explore with many different passage ways to follow.

Letter: Directions to directions for making real butter

LETTERS & FEEDBACK

ColumbiaMagazine.com

There are simple instructions for making butter at http://webexhibits.org/butter/doityourself.html .

It may not be what Debbie Sinclair is looking for, but it looks easy to make.

s/Marsha Walker

Thanks for the tip. Making the butter at home can be fun. Tom Waggener and Teresa Powell have a new hobby, making cheese at home. They've been really excited about the project. Butter making would offer more instant gratification and should burn a lot of calories in the process. -EDRead also: Debbie Sinclair still looking for real butter source
