Evlyn Komosa leaves largest estate gift in LWU history By Duane Bonifer Lindsey Wilson University has received its largest estate gift in the school's 123-year history, a $1.84 million bequest from the late Evlyn (Beard) Komosa of Columbia. The gift is unrestricted. The school's previous largest estate gift was $1.28 million. "Few people loved Lindsey Wilson and its mission more than Evlyn Komosa," said Lindsey Wilson University President William T. Luckey Jr. "For more than three decades, Evlyn was a devoted supporter of the Lindsey Wilson mission and how this school serves students. Her generosity will help young people throughout our region realize their educational dreams." An Adair County native, Komosa grew up on the Beard family farm in the Coburg area. She was educated in Adair County and then moved to work in Louisville, Kentucky, in the 1940s. While working in support of the war effort during World War II, she met her husband, Adam, who was an Army officer. The Komosas moved to Adair County after Adam retired, first from the Army as a lieutenant colonel and then from his second career as a college history professor in Michigan. Adam, who died in 1998, taught history at Lindsey Wilson. Evlyn Komosa died in 2025 at the age of 102. At the time of her death, she was LWU's oldest known living donor. Journal tips for writing your personal history Open your journal to two blank side-by-side pages. Use a ruler to draw a horizontal line across both pages. Write your birth year at the left end of the line and the current year at the right end. If you are worried about having enough space for your timeline (not that you're old!), you can stretch it across two more pages. Begin filling in important memorable dates as they come to mind. Following are some examples of milestones that would be a good addition to your timeline. Great Wooded South VIII: Going out West, Part II Read on for the latest installment from Billy Joe's days in the Kentucky Division of Forestry. Click here for all the entries in the Great Wooded South series By Billy Joe Fudge Actual flight time from Knoxville to Boise Idaho is five to six hours or so. Of course there are no direct commercial flights to Boise from Knoxville, but since our Evergreen International flight was a charter, we cruised right into Boise non-stop. You are probably thinking our destination was Boise because there were fires in Idaho needing our attention. However, that was not the case. Not that there were not fires in Idaho, but none needed our attention. In reality Boise is the location of the National Interagency Fire Center. Multiple agencies, including the United States Forest Service, coordinate wildfire activities from there. This was my first trip out to the Greater Rockies Region. I must say that for someone who was raised and grew up in the Green East Biome, the Brown West Biome posed significant challenges to my acclimation system. Carol Perkins: The Ski Trip (Part 3 of 5) Previous Column: The Ski Trip (Part 2 of 5) By Carol Perkins To follow the story from last week, when we finally reached the clearing, Judy held my arms for balance while I popped my skis into my boots, and then I did the same for her. We turned toward "down" and waited nervously for the adventure to begin. Our skis quickly skimmed the ice and eyed the slush. We were both on our backs within seconds, our skis crisscrossing each other in mid-air. "You be still and let me get mine untangled from yours, and then we'll figure this out," she suggested. For the first hour, the routine went something like this. We fell. She popped her skis, raised herself using her poles, pulled me up, and helped me into my skis. We would slide another two or three inches and edge right back toward the mud. Down in the slush we'd go. By then, we looked like mud wrestlers. After two hours, we had traveled about ten feet. Suddenly, we heard an engine. Someone had surely spotted us and was coming to our rescue! We flagged down the emergency snowmobile. "Ladies, I wish I could help, but a guy down the slope has broken his leg, and I have to attend to him." Students in seventh, eighth, and ninth grade agriculture classes researched and composed essays telling about the different types of wetlands in Kentucky and all the efforts from all stakeholders to conserve those wetlands, which support the cleanliness and vitality of our Kentucky countryside. The Jim Claypool Art and Conservation Writing Contests have offered opportunities for students to learn and participate since 1944. The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet webpage states that, "The contests educate students on soil, water, forestry and wildlife conservation. Students take the knowledge they have gained and transform it into creative art work and essays. Students can earn monetary prizes on the county, regional and state levels." Hospital tax ends, sweet news for Adair County The Adair County Hospital debt is retired, a vocational school is urged for future - these were highlights in ACJE Larry Russell Bryant's State of the County Address By Mig Feuser/Adair Progress During a State of the County address delivered Tuesday at a meeting of the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce, Judge Executive Larry Russell Bryant highlighted two developments he described as pivotal for Adair County's future: the payoff of the county hospital debt and renewed momentum toward establishing a local vocational school. Bryant framed his remarks around what he repeatedly called "arithmetic," focusing less on politics and more on long-term financial positioning and opportunity. While touching on economic development, tourism, and infrastructure, he returned several times to the belief that sound numbers--and strategic investments--can change the county's trajectory.
